I immediately manually loaded the program, thought a moment and did an immediate reboot, as well as what I'd done immediately preceeding the program crash, to attempt a deliberate provocation.

it didnt recurr. yet.

Sometimes programs will hit the odd bug :) I wouldn't worry too much unless it's a recurring event. If it does continue to occur, despite having reinstalled the program, I would suggest switching to MSE:

Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

It is highly regarded by the members of this forum :) Good detection rates, made by MS so no clashes between MSE and Windows and best of all: it's free!
