Firewall won't turn on

Greetings,

I have a Windows Vista 32bit HP Laptop. Recently, I uninstalled McAfee Anti-virus and other Verizon home security software, because I am no longer a Verizon Customer. I also purchased a new router. During router installation, I turned off the firewall trying to get the router to work. The firewall was turned off and I haven't been able to turn it back on since.

When I click on the Firewall icon with the white "X" in the Taskbar to get to the Security Center and then click on the "Turn on now" button, the following message is displayed:

Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall.

When I try to turn it on manually and click on the "Turn Windows Firewall on or off", the following message appears:

Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall service?

When I click "Yes", the following message appears:

Windows cannot start the Firewall service.

I have run out of options and am a bit concerned about my computer's security.

Your help is greatly appreciated,

S.

Hello sherifhanna82 and welcome to the forums

Firstly, I would like you to try this for me please:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Then do this:

Command Prompt

Hello Tom,

Thank you for your prompt response and detailed instructions.

Sorry for the delayed response. I travel for a living and had just returned home not too long ago.

I have followed your instructions and generated both .txt files. However, the CBS.txt file is 25+ MB, so it won't attach to the reply. I have attached the tom932.txt file.

Is there a particular portion of cbs.txt file that you are looking for. I can copy and paste that portion into another, smaller .txt file and attach it.

Thanks again and I am looking forward to hearing from you,

Sherif.

Hi Sherif,

No problem! I completely understand that people have lives outside of this forum.

Can you upload your CBS log to this website instead please?

Free large file hosting. Send big files the easy way!

Then send me the link.

Unfortunately, all of it provides useful information so I can't cut a portion from it.

I've got my semester 1 exams this week and will be unable to post for a few days now. I hope you understand. If this is urgent, then I'm sure I could find someone to help you whilst I'm away?

Hi Sherif,

There's lots of them around, but in my opinion SendSpace is the best as it doesn't have any delays for the download (the others usually have 30-60 second countdowns before you can download the file). Another great option is to get a Dropbox. It gives you 2GB of space that's synced with a folder on your computer if you use the desktop application, so you can copy and paste a file in there that you want to upload. But anyway, back to the problem!

Thanks for the CBS log! I spotted your problem in seconds which is good and bad I guess. I believe that the problem you have is to do with a bugged Windows Update, so it can be a little tricky to solve. I'm going to have to research a few things, then get back to you with a fix.

Give me a shout if you haven't heard from me in a few days!

Tom

Hello Tom,

I am so terribly sorry; somehow I missed your latest reply. I am away from home on work assignments right now, but I will follow the uninstall instructions as soon as I get home.

Thanks a million,

Sherif.

My Computer

Hello Tom,

I have uninstalled update KB2761494 and ran the sfc/scannow command. below is the link to my most recent CBS.log:

Download SHERIF CBS 2_8_2013.log from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

You may already know this, but I want to make sure I am being thorough. I noticed a couple of things:

1. After running sfc/scannow the command prompt screen stated that Windows Resource Protection found corrput files but was unable to fix some of them. The details are included in the CBS.log
2. Update KB2761494 is now in my Windows Update important queue. I will not install it until I hear back from you.

I can't thank you enough for all your help.

Sherif.

Hi Sherif,

No worries about the delay, I'm happy to help out whenever suits you best so please don't feel obliged to reply instantly.

Thanks for the CBS log! I'm currently on the train home and am tethering through my phone so I can't download a 50MB file, but I will have a look at it when I get in.

Hi Sherif,

Once again, sorry for the delay.

That seems to have fixed the problem! Firstly I would like you to reboot as it will clean out the CBS log, then I would like you to run another SFC:

SFC Scan
