How to bypass UAC for an old game?

Hello,

I have an old "Thomas Train" game for my son. It dates back 13 or 14 years.

In these old times, UAC had not been invented yet.

But I use Vista and I would like my son to be able to use the game without daddy to enter a password.

Of course my son only has a standard Windows access, I am keeping Admin rights for myself.

Of course I wouldn't like to totally disable UAC for him.

The program is now installed in C:\Program Files(x86). It was installed in Users/public before.

I shall inform you by the way that attempts to make it work through the task scheduler (and a shortcut to the newly created task) or UAC trusted shortcut or VistaUACMaker haven't been successful. An admin account seems necessary.

To sum it up, my question is: how to disable UAC for a program and only one, for a standard user?

Thank you very much.

Hello Ellioz,

UAC is a global setting. It can't be turned on or off for specific items, but only all.

If you haven't already, you might see if using the method in the tutorial below may be able work for this. It walks you through creating an elevated shortcut of the program/game using the runas command with your built-in Administrator account that a standard user can use.

Hope this helps, :)

It has workd almost to the end.

I can launch the game with the shortcut, but Vista asks me for the password at each PC reboot.

I searched for the credential manager in the control panel, to no avail.

So your method works, but the password is not saved.

I don't know how to save the password. I use Vista Family Premium, in French.

Thank you for your help, Brink.

It seems to me that /savecred doesn't work i, Vista Home versions.

Runas

You mentionned that it doesn't work in Home Basic, I think it doesn't work in Home Premium (my version) too.

To wit: the Runas command works, but the password is forgotten as soon as the computer is restarted.

Thank you for your help anyway. I'll need Windows Seven.

I'm sorry to hear that. Evidently it include Home Premium that the /savecred switch doesn't work with as well. :(

What you might try, and worksw on many games I play, is look for a different exe program to run the game.

Many games have a boot up/check program that sees if it's up to date etc, which requires UAC, then it luanches the game exe which doesn't.

If you find it does have that, you can simply make a short cut to that new xe and run the game directly.

Patonb, I'll try your suggestion later, I'm not on the right computer for that.

Brink, I've just installed the game on another computer with Windows Seven Home Premium and the runas / savecred command you advised has worked perfectly this time.

It is a great way to turn off UAC, because it doesn't need any third party software bu using at best Windows.

Great news so far Ellioz. Hopefully Paton's method may work as well.

Patonb,

Unfortunately, your suggestion hasn't worked. The second .exe file which launches the game performs the same checks, it also requires the UAC to be launched successfully.
