defender has been in programs folder for 3 -4 years.been using avast free.no problems. shoul i some how update and keep it in programs folder .most current date on defender in programs folder is from 2008.should i update or this procedure to complicated now. or should i just leave it be ?

Windows Defender in Vista is only anti-spyware and as such can be used alongside any antivirus you have installed so if I were you I would activate it in Control Panel and bring it up to date.

It's also an integral part of Windows and can't be removed.

to -ilikeitfree. nice poster reminds me of.. 70's .when we where young and used to smoke you know what.ain't seen that in long time.every time microsoft updates it updates defender so i guesss i have both service packs.i see it in current updates.to EX_BRIT every update from microsoft it shows update for defender. if i turn it back on cause it's just sitting in my programs folder do you think it will slow my system down ? for last 3 years i have been using avast free protection.

I doubt it would have any slowing effect but you might want to ask on Avast Forums perhaps.

Yeah I picked the avatar when I was told I had a terminal illness I liked the "just passing through" bit.
I think Ex_Brit gave you the best advice when he recommended looking at an Avast Forum
I would try it and see but often 2 anti-virus programs running together can cause problems. Not normally major problems though.

Never operate 2 antivirus applications together, that is good advice, but in this case Windows Defender isn't antivirus.
