Swimming in Grime

Hello again :)

Free Avast! keeps telling me I have a lot of grime on my PC.
Unfortunately cleaning it up requires paying.

Can I safely use CCleaner for this?
I read that one shouldn't use a Registry Cleaner.
Is that what CCleaner is or is that just an option I shouldn't choose (check) on CCleaner?

Last time I used CCleaner all hell broke loose and I had to come here for advice so I'm a bit concerned.

Cheers!

I use Ccleaner once a week with no problems. There is a separate section for the registry cleaning, do not do that. Then tick off the boxes that you know what is being cleaned. Any questions ask us.
Do not be concerned about the grime that Avast points out. There are probably some temporary files, etc that can be removed with other methods such as ccleaner or the disk cleanup that is part of Vista.

Thanks, Richard.

The problem is I have no idea what CC removes
When I click "are you sure you want to permanently remove these files?"...I'm not sure.

Once I believe it got rid of a dll ( or something) that was essential to windows running smoothly.
I believe it put me in the system repair from hell loop I reported here earlier.

BTW Richard,

My biggest pet peeve with CCleaner is it always erases my passwords to all the forums I visit.
I've un-clicked the "clean cookies" but it still erases them.

Is there a setting that will keep them?

I checked your setting and compared them to mine. I cannot comment on applications, since we do not have the same but with the other settings.
I have checked all but the last 2 with IE
I have checked all but the last 2
With advanced I have checked only the first 2

I would make a system restore point before using CC, if you are unhappy go back with system restore.
You can then ask us if you can change something to avoid the problem.

Regarding lost passwords. Go to options and then cookies. You will see a list of cookies to keep and those on the computer (left side). If you are having a problem with the passwords of Yahoo. Take all the Yahoos from the left and move them to the right. You also want to be sure that you have enabled intelligent scan. In the right hand cookie list, right click and tick intelligent scan. This automatically move the cookies to keep, after you use the site on a regular basis.

Avast wants you to use that grime thing. If computer is working well, you did a clndsk, ccleaner, got rid of temp files by putting %temp% in search, you are good. That's all I do and I am at 100%. Furthermore, if you fool around too much with these cleaning software you will be here eventually asking how to reinstall. Trust me

What are these two actions?
I just searched %temp% and came up with a long list in a folder.
Am I suppose to delete all those by deleting the folder?

Those are all temporary folders. You can delete them. I never had a problem deleting mine. To be sure that you do not remove anything that you should not, I have included information on that subject. Clean Dsk, is very important. After it is done, be sure to do it again and check the box clean system files. It may take 2 or 3 tries to get rid of most of the stuff.
Seriously, if after all these actions, if you are running good, do not worry about grime fighter. I did not when I had Avast.
