Vista Tutorial - Avast New Version Release

Hi Roy,

Yeah, it would be nice to be notified of a program update. I even have it set to automatically update both the program and the virus database.

I just purchased a new computer with Vista Premium preinstalled. I am currently using the free trial of Norton Anti Virus program. I see you have suggested using Avast Anti Virus. I am new to this and it seems that you can do a custom install on this product. How do I know what I need and don't need?

Hi Mimi,

I would go ahead and install everything. When it's finished installing, just right click on the ball with an A in it and click On-Access Protection Control. Click the Details button.

Now you can select what you want Avast to scan. I would recommend that you Terminate the Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange ones. These are redundant, and you are still protected by the other scanners.

I have everything installed on my system and found there is no noticable slow down or other problems.

One thing I think is brilliant is the ability to scan for virus when your screen saver is running.

how can i tell that the 64bit Vista version is downloaded and active?

Hi SportsGuy,

When you run the Avast installation/setup program, it will automatically detect if it's the 32 bit or 64 bit Vista and install the appropriate version. You can tell it's running if you have a blue ball with a white A in it in the bottom right of the taskbar.
