1. Open the Start Menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.
3. Click on the Continue button in the UAC prompt.

Modify2.jpg

8. Close regedit.
9. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply the changes.

OPTION THREE
Change All Default Fonts

NOTE: This will let you change the default fonts used by Vista using the registry.
1. To Change Default Fonts Using a REG File Download
NOTE: This changes the default fonts in Vista to the Tahoma font. You could use this REG file download to make doing step 2 below easier by editing the REG file for the font you want to use instead of Tahoma.
A) Click on the Download button below, and download the file below.
Set_Tahoma_Default_Font.reg
download

B) Click on Save, and save the .reg file to the desktop.
C) Right click the downloaded .reg file and click on Merge.
D) Click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted.
E) Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply changes.
F) When done, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

2. To Manually Change Default Fonts by Creating a REG File
NOTE: The REG file in step 1 is the same as in step 2B below. You can use it and just edit the font that you would like to use instead of Tahoma in step below.
A) Open Notepad.
B) Copy and Paste the code below into Notepad.
Code:
[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI"="Tahoma"[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]
All-1.jpg

C) In Notepad, edit Tahoma in quotes with the name of the font that you would like to use in instead with it still in quotes. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You can get the name of the font from the font folder location C:\Windows\Fonts. Be sure that you use the exact same font name that is listed. Do not include the Regular part in the font name. For example, I would type Impact instead of Impact Regular.
All-2.jpgAll-3.jpg

D) In Notepad, click on File (Menu bar) and Save As. (see screenshot below)
All-4.jpg

E) Type in a name you would like with a .reg file extension (ex: Impact-Fonts.reg), then click on the Save button. (see screenshot below)
All-5.jpg

D) Right click the created .reg file and click on Merge.
E) Click on Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted.
F) Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply changes.

3. To Restore the Default Fonts
NOTE: This will undo all changes that you made using either step 1 or step 2 above, and restore the original default fonts used by Windows 7.
A) Click on the Download button below, and download the file below.
Default_Fonts.reg

That's it,
Shawn

Many thanks, Brink, for the useful information!
I'm sorry, it seems everything is not so simple. I'm running Vista Ultimate x86 with Classic Theme, so AERO and Desktop windows manager are disabled. One thing is annoying me, here is the screen:

I've applied registry hint you has described, rebooting, but the problem still here. I've checked registry again, and everything is OK. Both parameters MS Shell Dlg and MS Shell Dlg2 are Tahoma.
Maybe you're can help?
Thanks in advance

Hi Verwolk,

Welcome to the Forum.

Most, but not everything is affected by this change. The Run window happens to be one of them. Sorry. Did you do all of step two also to change everything else?

Hi,
Another newbie is there a quick way to set font defaults in works, or will the method described serve to change and lock all font settins on all the programs.

Thanks,

Les.

My Computer

Hi Les,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I do not know if it will work in Works or not. All programs are different. Some use the same default as Vista, and some use their own settings. You can give it a shot to see. If it does not, then you can change them back to the default fonts if you wanted to.

Sorry, :(

I'm having the same problem as Verwolke, well i imagine its the same problem, i can't view his image completely, its only thumbnail size.

My lovely Tahoma font has been applied using your methods in the advanced appearance settings, and the registry tweaks. Credit is due there, well done for sussing that out, i can't stand cleartype in vista, so i turned it off and was left with nasty looking segoe UI everywhere.

The only places so far that don't seem to adopt the new font, are in prompt boxes and some message boxes, such as run, and the recycle bin delete confirmation box. Its driving me up the wall, i've scoured the registry for the culprit, and can't find it anywhere. Has anyone found a fix for this yet?

I've upped a screenshot of my issue, here:
link removed - no longer worked

The wordpad is open to show SegoeUI, compared with the message box, just to make sure its displaying that, when it should really be tahoma.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Brink,

Nice job. The explanation is easy. It is very visual and they are nice colors too :-)

If you want to get deeper, you may want to take a look there:
Fix Windows Vista’s Fonts! ~ Chris Pirillo
The registry fix is complete, but maybe a little harder to grasp for the beginners? Anyway do the usual registry backup (save your hives!!!) before to install the new keys.

NB: because many people complained about the change and did not have any backup, the original hives are even for you to download on a page if you do something wrong. If you don't find it, PM me and I will direct you.

I am not related with Chris Pirillo in any manner. This is not advertisement of some sort.

Cheers everyone.

Shawn

Hi back Brink. You are welcome.

There is ONE main difference between these 2 registry edits I try to clear up:

- Brink tutorial only changes the default system font = limited visual effect (especially under XP), BUT respects the external applications (Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc.) configuration.

- Chris fix changes the default system font and the mapping font of the OS & the APPLICATIONS = full visual effect, BUT some caveats. Wait, don't panic! I explain the changes with an example:

Office 2003 word's default template uses New Times Roman pt12, you will get Segoe UI instead (it's easy to make a new default template with your styles anyway.)

Acrobat Reader 8, 9, you will be able to read your .pdf but they will not print, unless
a. to print them as a picture (bad...)
Or
b. the font used in the PDF is not a font the .reg file substitutes for Segoe UI (i.e. Arial, New Times Roman, Thaoma, etc.) (Unlikely with 99.9% of the documents)

You have got the info, now that's a matter of taste, needs and choice.

Thank you again Admsupport. This has been added as a warning to help folks decide what option they would prefer to do.

I posted on this forum a loooong time ago, when i was having issues with my font changing in vista. The issue was the taskbar and dialog box fonts not changing to verdana like the rest of the fonts.

I scoured the registry for days, and eventually managed to get it working, but i've forgotten what i did, and know i've had to reinstall Vista, im stuck.

Has anyone managed to figure this out yet?

I thought i'd posted my solution on here, my account says i made two posts, but only one post is visible?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You go there Reverse Vista Font Fix - Vista Horizons
It will revert almost all (if not all) your changes to the default vista font settings (this is not for you, but it is related)

Beforehand, backup the full 5 keys. Do not backup the keys as (.reg) files, but as hives (*.*). In the case the result is not what you are looking for you can get back to your settings and give it a another try.

Hello O'Connel, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Since this has just happened, then you might do a System Restore instead using a restore point dated before this happened.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
