Re: DEP - Enable or Disable

Did you read through all of the replies there to see if you had any of the mentioned programs or WMP codecs installed that may have caused the DEP problem?

Re: DEP - Enable or Disable

Help ! Thanks (in advance) for all the expert help here. I had/have a problem with IE7 crashing any time I close a window or tab, so decided to disable DEP via the command prompt route. Now though things have got even worse and windows refuses to start

The initial screen offers me "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally". The former just doesn't get anywhere - i.e. it looks to fail doing whatever it's trying to within one second. And the latter goes through the motions and then brings me back to the same screen.

I also tried safe mode but that won't start...

Help...I appear to have killed my machine!

Alas, it's a Dell, so I don't have the full retail version Vista DVD, indeed not even a backup that I know where it is....

Can I reverse the bcpedit.exe command from this screen somewhere?

thanks again
Mark

Re: DEP - Enable or Disable

Hi Mark, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This tutorial will show you how to create a Recovery Disc that you can use to try and run Startup Repair from it instead to see if it can run this way. If that does not help, then you also have an option to boot to a Command Prompt to use the command: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx OptIn

Create a Recovery Disc

If this all fails, then your Dell computer should have a Recovery Partition that you can boot with to do a clean reinstall of Vista. This link will show you how to.

Dell - Support

Hope this helps,
Shawn
