Re: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

So I have gone to regedit and when I go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE the S-1-5 thing is not there. In the right panel I only have the default option. What else can I do to fix this problem? I would rather not delete the profile because I have a lot of stuff on it that I would like to keep but I have another admin profile on this computer but it would take a lot of time to transfer everything onto the other admin profile and then back onto the new profile and then delete them from the other admin profile. I have restarted my computer several times and it still won't load my profile.

Hello Tyler, and weclome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before this error may be able to fix it for you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

I have this problem but sadly, prior to this issue rearing its ugly head, I lost drive detection after the most recent service pack was installed. Hence (even via BIOS) I have no access to the my drives (HDD, DVD ROM and USB DVD ROM). I applied the fix from microsoft to sort the drive problems out but it didn't work. When I next powered up, I could no longer sign on to any of the 3 accounts. As soon as I try, my system attempts to re-boot and the cycle begins again.

How can I system restore without drive detection? BIOS shows all drives are disabled and I cannot adjust it to enable them. It even shows the HDD as disabled. (??)

O/S is Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Hello Watnstar,

See if resetting the BIOS to the default settings will allow the drives to be detected afterwards, and allow you to boot from the Vista installation DVD to do the System Restore.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Thank you for the help & comments. Sadly setting BIOS to defaults had no affect with regards to CD/DVD drives. I did manage to get back into Vista once I realised my USB ports were not working during boot. I changed the Keyboard from USB to a standard PS/2 and was able to F8 to Safe Mode. No password was necessary to get into the Admin account and I was able to System Restore from there. I also, as a safe guard, edited all the accounts and passwords in addition to setting up a new, spare, Admin account. I then created a new Restore Point.

The drive issue remains, but at least I have access to the O/S. After all my recent Vista negatives, I'm lapping up this major positive! :-)

Now all I need do is investigate the drive issue, fix some USB bugs and figure out why I've also got a dodgy (works sometimes) ethernet adaptor. But that's set to be another post on another thread.

Waynstar,

I'm happy to hear that it's heading in the right direction so far. You might see if connecting the drives to different ports on the motherboard may help.

Re: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Hi guys - brilliant resource - thank you!

Trying to fix this prob on my girlfriends laptop - remotely ! She's away! So was just going to try to activate the built in Admin for her as a quick fix.

I've been testing your excellent guides out on my (fully ok) system and it all works fine using an admin account. But I can't get into an elevated command prompt as a standard user. I get System Error 5 Access Denied. (I have UAC disabled)

I'll try to take her via Safe Mode but I reckoned enabling via the command prompt might have been easier for her to do.

Am I being dense here? Is an elevated command prompt not available from a standard account when there's a working admin account available? Or maybe my system is not as ok as I thought?

Regards
