Re: Speed up Computer Boot Time

this is an excellent tutorial. A few questions if you don't mind. I am running Vista 32 and have installed service Pack 1.
What is GUI?
In addition to Vista I have Windows XP and the ghost 14 installed on my computer so that when it boots I am given a choice of "previous operating system, Vista, and ghost recovery". My boot time is 10 seconds. Do you still recommend that I make changes-- -- for example ticking "no GUI" and "make changes permanent".
I have the full version of utilities 2008 so I see no need to run see cleaner as well or do you believe that one should run both?

I'm sorry for such a long winded reply

Re: Speed up Computer Boot Time

graphics user interface..i wouldnt mess with it on XP...its just vista has a bland boot up screen and it removes that and replaces that with an aurora screen on vista..
by the way 10 seconds?? wow..what are your system specs?

and the cleaners..
normally i run them both..
but one is sufficient

Re: Speed up Computer Boot Time

Thanks a lot Mathews, I can tell a big difference on bootup. I do have a question for you though on the part where we go to the device driver. I have 4 other things that pull down from the device driver other than the disk device. They are as follows:

Generic-compact flash USB device
Generic-MS/MS pro USB device
Generic-SD/MMC USB device
Generic-SM/xD-Picture USB device

There is an option under policies for optimize for quick removal or optimize for performance. Which one should be checked for these 4?

Thanks, Case

Re: Speed up Computer Boot Time

Tips no's 8 and 12 are the only really useful ones for speeding up boot time IMO. The rest are unnecessary, and counter productive on a newly installed OS.

Re: Speed up Computer Boot Time

First of all, thanks for taking the time on the tutorial. With all due respect, though, I would like to make a recommendation. You really should take a moment to explain to people the CONSEQUENCES of what you're advising them to do so that they can evaluate if those changes are appropriate for them. I mention this because I ran through a number of these steps yesterday, and while I was aware I was deleting my cookies and my url history, I was not aware I was turning off my ability to ever use those things again. Now I have to sign in to every single forum, website, and secure logon every single time I connect, and I have to retype every url longhand in order to get to my most used pages.
This may or may not make my computer faster, but it sure makes my work slower. I will now go back and see if I can't undo the settings that have changed, so that this avoidable burden can be lifted. Please consider this though, the next time you decide that a few ms of drive speed is more valuable then 10 minutes a day typing the same username and password over and over again.

Re: Speed up Computer Boot Time

OK so I just saw this thread and was reading over it.. and I have everything on that list done.. all but one thing.. the msconfig.. I go in there and I changed all the things I wanted to load and startup and what not.. but as for the no GUI boot thing.. that is NOT checked on my system. what is "No GUI Boot" what will that do by checking that.. like whats the point of it.. how does it help.. and the timeout seconds.. changed to 3 seconds.. mine is set for 30 seconds.. whats that mean.. that basically is how long it waits.. or what does that exactly stand for also if someone could please explain.. should I lower it to 3 seconds.. thats a big difference.. or should I change it to like 10 or something just to be not so different from default.. or does is not really matter.. an explanation on these would be very much appreciated.. my PC loads pretty quick.. but always can be better
