Shawn - seeing as you took the time to create this, I was wondering if you could answer two related questions for me; the problem is now solved, but it left me still in the dark. The Send To commands for Desktop (Create shortcut) and Mail Recipient abruptly vanished one day earlier this week. Any idea why? And it might be related to that question, but as I rummaged around looking for a fix, I'd found many threads talking about values in the registry (which I had in mine, so that wasn't it) and how to add and delete destinations in Send To. But I also noticed from my other machine that Desktop referred to .Desklink, while Mail Recipient referred to .IMAPMail. These do not look like simple destinations, so I didn't want to just create shortcuts for the desktop and for Outlook and drag to the Send To folder. Would that have worked as well? And is the fact that these two destinations are more like commands have anything to do with their vanishing act?

I used to be OK dealing with XP, but having to learn some new & puzzling stuff on Vista 64.

Thanks again for the easy fix.

Peter

My Computer

You're welcome Peter,

There could be several reasons why they would have vanished on you. The usual suspects are some utility program setting or malware.

No, those shortcuts would not have worked with just those files for the destination. About the only simple shortcut you could use like that would be a drive shortcut.

Thanks! It worked perfectly! Now why in the world would Vista drop items from this menu? So far I've lost the DVD drive and the Mail to:

My Computer

You're welcome Narch, and welcome to Vista Forums. :)

It can be anything from the drive's driver to a wrong association for Mail To that could cause them to drop off.

Shawn, I'm trying to add 'send to Quick Launch' to my Send To context menu, so that I can have items sent to Quick Launch. Thanks to your Tutorials, I have learned how to add and delete other items to the Send To folder, however, I can't figure out how to create the Quick Launch shortcut to put in there. OR instead, are you supposed to link to the actual Quick Launch app itself --- which I can't even seem to find in the Start Menu (or in the C:\ drive). Can you please help me to create the shortcut for Quick Launch, and then to give me the steps (in case I've done something wrong) to add it to the the Context Menu. Thanks very much!

Hello Sue,

I believe that you could create a shortcut folder of the hidden system folder C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch folder to place in the Send To folder for this.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello Vista Forums,

This thread appears to address the issue I'm having pretty closely, except what just disappeared was my H drive, the DVD RW. I've never burnt anything to disc and I'm trying to burn a driver disc for another machine because I wasn't smart enough to save the network or any other drivers before doing a clean XP install on that machine (yes, I'm that clueless). I downloaded all of the essential drivers from the manufacturer site, put in a blank rewriteable DVD+R, opened downloads, right clicked on the first driver, hovered over send to, and chose the H drive. I saw a message saying Windows failed to format disc, and then when I tried again, the H drive was no longer in the Send To drop down menu.

How do I fix this?

Thanks for any replies and thanks for sharing your expertise with the clueless masses on a forum like this.

Hi,

In addition to what kinghthood has suggested, check in system set-up if the CD drive is getting detected.

Also check in device manager and check if the CD drive is present. To go in device manager, press “Windows key + R” which launches run window. In run dialog box type in “devmgmt.msc”. Device manager window would open.

Please post the results.

Madhur, my friend, Device Manager shows Matsu****a BD-MLT UJ-230AS under the 7th drop down tab for DVD/CD ROM Drives, so we know she sees the DVD drive.

Now, I'll try the link.

I ran the MS autofix and chose "write a disc" but after it ran, it said it detected no problems therefore it applied no fixes. I then checked the downloads "send to" drop down menu, but still no H drive.

Ok, now I restarted w/o change and then powercycled even though that's what I first tried when the problem manifested, but now I can see the H drive in the drop down. Unfortunately, when I actually try to click the H drive in "send to" which is how I thought one burned data to the disc, it just ejects the DVD+R and tells me to insert a writeable disc. I tried three different discs, same result.

I guess it's progress since it didn't fail to format and the drive didn't disappear, but I'm just as baffled. Could I have a defective pack of rewriteable DVD+Rs? I'll try the link again.

The autofix tells me the media is not writable. I'm using 4.7GB 120 min 1-16x speed Phillips DVD+R discs that have "RW" inscribed in a little square on the disc. I also tried choosing to troubleshoot for reading the disc, but it did not detect readable media.

Hi,

Let’s check if the computer is able to read any CD or DVD. Insert any CD (like an audio, software or any other disc which has data on it) in the computer and check if it is able to read any disc.

If no, then insert the Operating System disc and try to boot and check if it is able to detect the boot from the disc.

Note: We are not installing windows on the computer, we are checking if the CD drive is working properly.

If yes, then reboot the computer in normal mode and check if it gives an error message and try to perform system restore to a date when the computer was working fine.

NOTE: With system restore you will not lose any data from the computer, any new programs installed in the computer has to be reinstalled on the computer.

For your reference, here is the link to perform system restore: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

Please post the results.
