Re: Windows Mail problems

Lis-ka,

It sounds like Norton may have corrupted your email account. You might run the Norton Removal Tool to make sure it uninstalled cleanly. You will probably need to delete your email account to get rid of the corruption, then close and reopen Windows Mail. Now, recreate the email account. (Tools -> Account -> Add -> E-mail account)

You might write down the account settings before you delete it so you will know what all the settings were. Plus, backup any email messages you want saved.

If this still does not help, then do a full Windows Mail Reset afterwards. See this tutorial on page 1 for how.

Re: Windows Mail problems

Hi Hazer,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

You will usually get this message when you try to open a attachment in a message that you do not have a program installed to open it with. (Ex:Notepad.exe for a TXT file) You can find out what file extension the attachment is by right clicking on it and click Properties. Let us know what the file extension is, and we might be able to find you a free viewer program that you can use to open it with.

The area in the control panel that the message is refering to is this:

How to Associate a Individual File Extension Type With a Program in Vista

or

How to Set Default Associations For a Program in Vista

Re: Windows Mail problems

Shawn,

I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool and that had no effect on the problem.
I also followed the steps to reset my WM but again it had no effect.
Any suggestions?

Re: Windows Mail problems

Lisa,

I believe we tried all the simple things. I would recommend doing a Repair install. This will allow you to repair your Vista installation without losing your files, settings, and programs.

Re: Windows Mail problems

Lisa,

Did you notice when it started to do this? Was it after you installed any program or made any setting change? If you undo it, it may work again.

If the above does not help, then only other thing I can think of that should fix it is a clean install.

Re: Windows Mail problems

Lisa,

A clean install is when you format the hard drive and reinstall Vista, a total wipe of everything. You will need to backup anything you do not want to lose. If you have a OEM recovery DVD, then see the Full Version tutorial.
