Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

I am confused about something. Should my computer be set to sleep, hybrid sleep or hibernation. As it is now , if I leave my computer for awhile when I get back I have to hit the power button on the computer and it says "resuming windows".

Hi Casey,

It depends on what your needs are.

Sleep allows the computer to wakeup the fastest without the "resuming window", but it also stores everything running on the computer when it enters sleep in just RAM. If you lose power, you lose what is in RAM. This is good if you are constantly getting on and off the computer.

Hibernation can take the longest to wakeup from the three options with the "resiming window". It stores everything on the hard drive so you will not lose it if you lose power, but it takes longer to load from the hard drive than from RAM. This can be good if you leave the computer sitting for a good while after using it and do not want to risk losing anything.

Hybrid is a inbetween option. It lets you have the computer use sleep mode up to a time you specify, then after that the computer enters hibernation.

Hope this helps you decide what would work best for you. You can try all three as a test to see.

One more thing. What does this mean?
Multimedia settings - When sharing media - Set to Allow the computer to sleep.

Right now it is set to 'allow computer to enter away mode'. Should I change it?

This is for if you have devices or remote/networked computers playing multimedia (EX: Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, etc) from your computer and you want your computer to still enter sleep mode or not when it comes time for it.

I changed mine to "Allow the computer to sleep" to prevent it from being waken up by anything, but it depends on your needs.

Hey people,

I just discovered something!

I ended up not re installing vista, but I was going to. I took out 2 GB of RAM because I've heard of problems while installing Vista with more that 2 GB of RAM. I ended up booting into Vista for one last time and I decided to try sleep.

SLEEP WORKED!!!

After removing my 4 GB of RAM and reduced it to 2 GB, sleep was working, my video was working, sound was working and network was working.

The only thing is, is that I play Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX uses a whole bunch of resources) and when I tried to play with 2 GB of RAM, I was getting "exploding" autogen (tall vertical lines coming out of autogen). That is usually a warning that an out of memory error is about to occur.

I am about to try to disable hybrid sleep to see if that is a problem. I guess this would have never occurred originally because Vista 32 bit can only use like 3.25 GB of RAM.

Does anyone know why my computer won't sleep with 4 GB or RAM? Or can anybody help me?

You may have a bad memory stick. You can use the Memory Diagnostics Tool on each one to see what it says. Just run it on one of them, then replace it with the other one and run it again.
