Send To Context Menu

How to Customize the Send To Context Menu in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8

information   Information
This tutorial will show you how to add or delete shortcuts from the "Send To" context menu in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

The items for the Send To context menu are located in the hidden system folder below.

C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

Tip   Tip
To remove or show drive letters in the Send To context menu, see: How to Remove or Show Drive Letters in the Vista and Windows 7 Send To Context Menu . Drives in the Send To menu can cause it to open slowly or hang for a bit if the hard drives have to spin up first before accessing them.

EXAMPLE: Send To Context Menu with added Notepad
sendto.jpg

Here's How:

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for how you would like to open the SendTo folder.

2. Open a Windows Explorer window, navigate to the hidden system folder below, and go to step 4 below.
C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo
3. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type shell:sendto, press Enter, and go to step 4 below.

4. Add or Delete any drive, folder, or application shortcut you like that uses the Open With option for the Send To window below.

NOTE: For example: Notepad, Paint, Photo Gallery, dvd drive, any folder, etc. For a drive, right click on the drive in Computer and click Create Shortcut for it to placed on the desktop, then move the shortcut to here.

That's it,
Shawn

I have checked both my Sent To folders and they do not contain any references to my mapped network drives, however all mapped network drives are appearing in the Send To list.

This means if I accidentally hover over the Send To menu so that it expands, Vista
interrogates all the network drives which means spinning up all 8 disks in my NAS whcih takes about 30-45 seconds - VERY ANNOYING.

Any ideas how I can stop this?

Here is a really useful application I have come across that allows you to customise the Send To menu, including adding useful options such as being able to send to the Quick Launch menu.

And its FREE!

Hi Jedinight2002,

I suppose that you could remove the ones that you do not plan on using Send To with from the Send To folder.

That's a nice free program you ran across. I wish it had some more options though on what it can add.

Sorry Shawn, I don't understand what you are suggesting.

Hi, I have followed your tutorial, but the shortcut I have created in the sendto folder still doesn't appear in the context menu. here is what I did.

1. open the run dialog, and type in shell:sendto, and hit enter. (send to folder appears)
2. and as in xp, i right click on the window and bring up the context menu, click "new" and then "shortcut"
3. then I have located an exe (I have tried a folder as well), and finish creating the shortcut.

now, i go back to my desktop and pick any file, the shortcut i have just created still does not appear on the send to context menu. any idea?

is there still any windows policy which may have an effect?

My Computer

Hello Dereklio, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Did you put the shortcut into the Send To window? You can only use a location (ex: folder) to add to the Send To menu, or a shortcut of an exe file that uses Open With (ex: Notepad).

Hope this helps,
Shawn

thank you very much for your reply. yes, i did trying both.
i right click on the send to windows and use new --> shortcut to create the shortcut. I created the shortcut to Notepad.exe. and then I double click on the shortcut within the send to explorer windows and it does bring up Notepad.

I followed the same procedure in winxp and it works fine, the shortcut appears immediately in the context menu, but with my vista installation, it doesn't work as expected. so i wonder if there is any further setting in vista that can prevent it from happening?

Dereklio,

What file are you trying to add to the Send To menu?

Hi!

I know I messed up big time.
I have a different type of problem. I followed the instruction but instead of putting a shortcut into the Send To program I put the actual program(Desk Top) now I have three desktops showing up in my Send To instead of one. When I try deleting the extra desktops they keep coming back? How do I get rid of the extra two?
One is Desktop (create shortcut) the original one the second one is Desktop and the third one is Desktop (764).

Any advise will be greatly appreciated,
Kate

I have found adding send to to the send to menu makes this a lot easier.
When I find a program I want to add, or a tool for that matter ex.GSpot, I just right click and send to the send to menu. It works for tools if you leave tools in there own folder and don't move them.

I see all 11 choices but don't know which one to use for my particular problem? Sorry I am so computer illiterate. I don't want to make any more huge mistakes. I would hate to have to re-install windows and start from scratch. I do appreciate your patients and help.

Thanks,

I did it and I was able to remove one of the Desktop icons from Send To. The One that says desktop(764) can not be deleted. It tells me "Destination Path Too Long. The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path." Then it only gives me two choices Skip or cancel. I tried both and the darn desktop folder (764) keeps coming back. During this experiment I have lost my desktop Icons (Briefcase, Documents) How do I get them back?

Thanks,
Kate

See if you may be able to rename the desktop(764) folder to a smaller simpler name, then try deleting it again.

Those are not desktop icons, Could you post a screenshot of this location that you are refering to so that I can be sure of what you mean exactly? :)
