Hi pRose DC,

It would be nice to have exceptions for programs in UAC like in a firewall program., but that is not an option in Vista. It's all or none. :(

Sorry,
Shawn

Hi

I am trying to install Symantec Antivirus software under Vista Home Premium and get the following error message:

This version of Symantec AntiVirus requires elevated privileges in order to install.

I have tried the download and manual options described in:

How to Elevate Administrators UAC Privilege Level in Vista

but still cannot install Symantec.

Any ideas?

Hi TrevB,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I hate to say this, but I would avoid installing any Symantec Norton antivirus program on Vista until they can fix the problem. There has been so many reported problems with Norton and Vista it isn't even funny anymore. I would recommend using something like the free Avast antivirus instead. It may have just saved you a headache later by not installing.

I use Vista Home Premium and successfully followed method 2 above. That method seems to turn off the UAC.
Me too, I'm getting the nag notification after rebooting. Is this reg edit any different to turning off UAC, as I understand from another tutorial both UAC and the nag can be easily turned off? Or is it turning it off for the administrator but not for other users?

Turning UAC back on has changed that reg field back from 0 to 2.

My Computer

Hi cpemma,

This tutorial does not turn off the UAC. It just elevates the default Administrator account so it will not get a UAC permissions prompt, but still leave most of UAC on for better security than just turning UAC off completely.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,

I use a standard account on Windows Vista Home Premium and I, unfortunately, have UAC.
I tried Method 2 but it doesn't seem to work.
A note that says "Error" pops up every time I try to merge the download(s) and even through the manuel way.

I need help, please.

Chris.

My Computer

Hi Chris,

This will have to be done while logged on to a administrator account. It will not work from within a Standard account. It will also not elevate the Standard accounts, only the administrator accounts.

Sorry, :(

I still have to choose the Run As Administrator option for various programs to get full use, eg Command Prompt, DVD Maker or I get errors that appear to be corrected by running the app as Administrator. I thought this elevate thing effectively makes the Run As Adminstrator the default - have I misunderstood or am I doing something wrong?

My Computer

Hello MadKingSoup, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This only elevates the privilege level with UAC. It does not affect havng to use Run as administrator with some programs for them to work properly. :(

Sorry,
