How to Change the Computer Name in Vista

    information   Information
Computers on a network or workgroup must have a unique computer name so they can identify and communicate with each other. This will show you how to change your computer name in Vista.
    Note   Note
    Make sure the computer name is unique in your network, not more than 15 characters, and you cannot use characters like these: ` ~ @ # $ % ^ & ( ) = + [ ] { } | ; : , . < > / ?
    warning   Warning
Some Internet service providers (ISPs) require you to use a specific computer name so they can identify your computer and validate your account. If your ISP requires a specific computer name, then do not change the name they give you.

    Here's How:
    1. Open the Control Panel. (Classic View)

    2. Click on the Click to Play button in the video below.
    That's it,
    Shawn

    Re: Computer Name

Hi, I have a different name change issue and I don't know how to describe it in order to find it on the search engines because when I type in "change computer name" I get THIS solution, which doesn't address my problem.

Attached is a jpg showing my problem. And here's the description:
The folder, if you will that is the main drive of my computer, the one usually called "Computer" or "My Computer", was accidentally changed by me when I was sleepy and poking around in the innards of my computer trying to resolve a major problem with my WUA. (I know, not a good idea to make changes when sleepy! ;-D )

So anyway now instead of Computer>C>Folder I have Be Here Now>C>Folder. My "computer name" is still DellXP430, that's not the issue, and my USERNAME is still Be Here Now. But I now have both my main Computer drive named Be Here Now and my Username Be Here Now and that's confusing so I want to just change it back to "Computer".

See jpg of my folder tree and I think you'll understand what I want to change:
    Name: Computer folder name.JPG

THANK YOU for your help with this!

Looks like you want to change the name of your "My Computer" folder instead.
