(Good Luck) Access(ing) Vista Install DVD Files!

Hello,
I attempted to access the install.wim image file from the command line using the above tutorial, with the correct specification of folder one ("1") within that file. Not only did I have easy access to all files within Sources on the DVD, but just in case a DVD spin-up timeout created the problem, I literally copied the entire 3 GB+ file to a completely different fast Harddrive, making file availability almost instantaneous. Same error message...still cannot get access to proper image file. One other person on this forum posted an identical issue in August 2007 with no resolution posted.

Could Microsoft have done something to the contents of that image file? Say, placed it in a folder other than folder one. Does anyone have knowledge of a technique for extracting a file section from a *.wim file, bypassing the need to use the mount command from the command line? Is there a program that will allow the exploration of *.wim files...this might help to narrow down the problem.

I sure would like to fix my Vista 64-bit O/S. Evertime I do a clean install, within a week or two, sfc finds but can not fix the corruptions...Geez...I go back to Fortran IV on IBM 360/370 compilers...I don't think I've ever used an O/S, including Red Hat/Debian or DOS 6.22, Windows 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000 SP4, XP, that has ever corrupted as frequently as Vista32/64. I have Vista 32 on three boxes and 64 on two (all Ultimate) and they all corrupt with similar levels of frequency when using sfc to check for it. In other words, Vista corrupts with relatively good reliability across different mainboards, memory, processors, video cards, and hard discs! Maybe sp1 will fix this self-destructive behavior.

I don't know why this isn't working for you. I have seen occasions where sfc actually corrupts some system files when you run it. You might try not running sfc. Another idea, when working correctly sfc copies files in another location on your C drive to replace any corrupt system files it finds, but often the stored copies are also corrupt and then sfc can't repair the corrupt ones. Try booting from you Vista DVD and running sfc from the command prompt and Run As Administrator off the DVD. sfc should then access DVD files to replace corrupt files on your C drive.

Once you have install.wim mounted, run a Search of the drive you mounted it to for the file you need, then Open File Location to copy the file.

Re: Access Vista Install DVD Files

Thanks for your advice, but I'm still having some difficulties.

1. I should have mentioned that I haven't been able to get the wim file mounted (aik installed fine), so I am just doing a search of the dvd directly for the file. Should this allow me to find the file, or do I need to mount the wim?
2. If I need to mount the wim, perhaps you can tell me what I am doing wrong. I am running the following command from an adminstrator command prompt from the c:\program files\windows aik\tools\x86 directory: imagex /mount e:\sources\install.wim 1 j:\vistamount. c: is my hard drive with the os, e: is my dvd drive, and j: is my external hard drive with plenty of free space. All I keep getting is an error saying "error mounting image. The system cannot find the file specified". Any ideas?
3. I also tried booting off the dvd and running a sfc /scannow from the command prompt, but all I get is a message that windows can't do this.

Help! Any ideas and help are appreciated. I can only boot into safe mode at this point.

Be sure to follow each step carefully and be sure the syntax in the command line is exactly as shown in the tutorial, including spaces.

1. Install Windows AIK as a subfolder under the Program Files folder.
2. Install the WIM File System Filter.
3. Create the Vistamount folder on your j drive (this drive must be NTSF format).
4. Take Ownership of the Vistamount folder and grant yourself Full Control over this folder.
5. Mount the install.wim file. This single file on your Vista Install DVD contains all the OS files; you will not find any system files on the DVD other than mounting and looking in the install.wim file.
6. Once the install.wim file is mounted on the j drive in the vistamount folder, search this drive for the files you need, copy them to the respective folders in your OS, then unmount install.wim.

Good luck! Bruce

Re: Access Vista Install DVD Files

Thanks for your help.

Here's what I've done and checked as a result of your latest posting.
1. I verified that Windows AIK is installed in a subfolder of Program Files.
2. I installed the WIM file system filter again, just to make sure.
3. My external hard drive is FAT32, and there is a lot of stuff on there I don't want to lose, so I don't want to reformat it to NTFS. I didn't realize it had to be NTFS until your message in the post. Instead, I have a flash drive that I reformatted to NTFS. The flash drive is k: on my system. I made a folder called Vistamount on the flash drive.
4. I then used the following command in the c:\program files\windows aik\tools\x86 directory: imagex /mount E:\Sources\install.wim 1 K:\Vistamount. Again I get the error: "Error mounting image. System cannot find the file specified".
5. I typed in those paths while still in the command prompt and the install.wim is indeed in the E:\Sources directory and the Vistamount folder is on the K: drive.

Questions:
1. Can you see anything I am doing wrong here?
2. What size should the flash drive be to mount the image? Maybe that's my problem.
3. Any ideas as to why I can't get sfc /scannow to run off the command prompt when I boot off the Vista DVD, as per my last posting? Maybe if I can get this to work, this could solve my problem.

Thanks again for your patience helping me out here.

I've just been having the same trouble as Bobbio65 - caused in my case by taking the tutorial examples too literally. After installing the AIK you must choose the subfolder with the correct architecture, install the correct wimfilter.inf and use the version of Imagex in that folder. I also discovered to my surprise that my Intel Core 2 Duo needs the AMD64 version of the tools.

Hope this helps.
