Re: Repair Install For Vista

Hi Paul,

Yes he did. He needed to do that to make the DVD a newer version of Vista than what was currently installed.

Yes that's what I did. The sp1 uninstall went smooth. It only took about 30min to do the full install. Just incase your uninstall fails and you pc becomes unbootable then you can use the oem vista dvd to boot and use the repair option to trigger system restore. After removing sp1 the upgrade option was available. The upgrade process was very very slow initially proabably cuz vista and other services were running as well but then after the first stage restart it picks up speed.

@Brink: Thanks a lot everything went smooth with the upgrade and my problems are solved. All previous programs are working except the ones with drivers such as virtual clone drive, hamachi, virtual audio cable etc. I just finished reinstalling all drivers and applications that use drivers and I'm back on track.

Re: Repair Install For Vista

Thought I would let you know that this applies to Windows 7 as well, I just tried it to see if I could get those disabled services back up and it all went smoothly and is now fully functional again, all programs and settings remained untouched aside for a registry tweak for the sidebar to work with UAC off.

Re: Repair Install For Vista

Hi.

Recently my laptop stopped booting vista--it just sits at the screen with the loading bar--so I tried to do a repair install off the vista DVD, but it as far as the first splash screen with the cursor on the screen and never moves past this point. I've heard that it takes awhile for vista to load from DVD but after 45 minutes I get the feeling nothings happening.

Re: Repair Install For Vista

Hello Mpt087, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It seems that you may need to restore Vista back to factory defaults (clean reinstall) using your recovery partition or CD instead. You will usually have to press a key at boot to do this recovery. It should be displayed briefly during bootup for what key you will need to press.

Sorry.

Re: Repair Install For Vista

Yeah, I was afraid it was going to come to that. Do you happen to have any guesses as to why it would be doing that?
