| Administrator | Re: Notification Icons - Reset Ok niGht kiD and Old Stuff, Welcome to the form Old Stuff. ![]() The kinks have been worked out and the tutorial has been updated. I tested it several times and it works perfectly with the update. The update required to restart explorer.exe first then do a logoff and logon or restart. Thank you for bringing this to my attention guys. ![]() Shawn |

| Newbie | Re: Notification Icons - Reset Shawn, Thanks for the clarification -- this time it worked. I looked and looked a few months ago for a fix to this clutter and found nothing. I noticed, though, that the procedure had to be repeated when I changed user accounts. This got me to wondering if the reg edit was needed or if it was stopping and starting explorer that did the trick. On the second user account I checked before logoff/restart and the clutter was gone. Guess I can experiment when the clutter builds up again. Anyway, many thanks for a happy ending. Ron |

| Administrator | Re: Notification Icons - Reset Ron, Yep, the registry edit is necessary to reset it. The IconStreams (Current) and PastIconStreams (Past)values hold the data for the notifications and needs to be deleted. Restarting explorer.exe wipes out what is in memory and leaves only the currently running notification area items in memory. We seen what happens without the explorer.exe restart. No memory wipe, so the data was still there after doing the below. ![]() The logoff and logon (or Restart) allows the IconStreams and PastIconStreams values to be automatically regenerated with what is left currently in memory so it can keep track of the new notifications from that point on. Hope this helps with your experiments. ![]() Shawn |

| Technophile Wannabe | Re: Notification Icons - Reset Hey Shawn, You are the man !!!You keep teaching me "stuff" I won't know how to act. It took me a while to figure out; I had to do both Admin. and Standard U. accts. I didn't know I could use regedit as Stan. U. But I'm glad I tried! Doesn't work in all instances, does it? Thanks a lot, Shawn !!! |

| Administrator | Re: Notification Icons - Reset Hi Ted. Sure you can use regedit in a Standard account. You will only be able to modify items in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER location though. Anything else must be done in an Administrator account, or right click on regedit in a Standard account and click Run as administrator, then give the password. |
