| | printer inventory I took a look at the technet scripting archive and looking for something that would possibly retrieve the serial number for local printers. I'm trying to create an inventory of all our printers, both local and network. The main goal is to get the serial number. Any ideas of how this can be done? |

The only way that I can think of to get the SN from a printer is via SNMP. I know of no SNMP provider for Windows aside from the SNMP service which would allow SNMP queries of the Windows system and I am pretty sure it does not provide any way to query external devices such as printers. I would think that you would need a third party tool that supports a COM interface for script access. One other thought that comes to mind, at least for HP printers. Most of the newer printers support a web interface. You could easily use IE via Script to load the page that has the serial number info, then parse the page for what you want. TDM |
