| xp | Where is VBscript now? Advice please... I've been out of the software biz since 2002.. now, I've got another bright idea and thought I'd dust off my brain, grab a case of Monster and start coding again. The last apps I coded used Vbscript some Jscript, ADO, DHTML. Things were moving to .Net -- Are web apps still primarily written in uncompiled script? Sandwiched between HTML Tags? Basically, I'm asking what has changed in the past 6 years? Thanks |

| | Re: Where is VBscript now? I imagine it probably depends on what sort of stuff you're doing. In the last 6 years .Net has come onto the scene to compete with Java in terms of corporate intranet applets and such. Also, VBScript has been "de-emphasized", but it's still supported in IE and Windows, with no sign that support will end. Another big development is Ajax -- using javascript with the httpRequest object to enable clunky but serviceable interactive "web apps" like Google Maps. A third development is that Microsoft is developing Silverlight while Adobe tries to expand the role of Flash, with both companies trying to predict and own the perceived market for "rich" web-based "software". In a word, it's all cloud all the time. "Cloudism" is the current bubble, the current next big thing, simply because nobody has any other ideas about how to replace the income that used to come from frequent updates to overpriced software. So if you want to jump on that bandwagon you can write AJAX, or Flash, or Silverlight. The very latest next big thing is Azure, a new move by Microsoft that they describe as a cloud OS. The idea seems to be that they want to get software developers to move from the Windows platform to Azure web services, where you can write applets and pay MS to host them. Quote: > Advice please...
