.ToLower() method doesn't work!

Hi, I have written these simple script lines in PowerShell:

##
$User = "0743159"
$excUser = get-mailbox -identity $User
$excPrimarySmtpAddress = $excUser.PrimarySmtpAddress
$excPrimarySmtpAddress = $excPrimarySmtpAddress.ToLower()
Set-User -identity $User -WindowsEmailAddress $excPrimarySmtpAddress
##

when I execute the script I receive this error:
"Method invocation failed because [Microsoft.Exchange.Data.SmtpAddress]
doesn't contain a method named 'ToLower'.
At C:\Documents and Settings\0758014\Desktop\test3.ps1:5 char:56
+ $excPrimarySmtpAddress = $excPrimarySmtpAddress.ToLower( <<<< )"

Why does it not work? How can I do to convert from uppercase letters to
lowercase letters the $excPrimarySmtpAddress variable?
Thank you very much for your support. I wait your answer.

This is Powershell code. Why are you asking the question in a
VBScript group. You'll have more like, I think, in a Powershell
group.
