virtualize on 64-bit?

My old computer is XP Pro 32-bit. My new computer is Vista Home Premium
64-bit. I am trying to install an old piece of software (Chartview
navigation) that ran fine on my old computer. When I try to install on the
new I get an error message that indicates to me that the software won't (?)
run on 64-bit. If I install Virtual PC will it run? Or does virtualization
only allow OS with the same bit to run? I know that didn't sound very
technical, but am unsure what terminology to use.

Re: virtualize on 64-bit?

VPC will run almost all 32bit operating systems and XP runs fine. As long
as Chartview does not require special hardware it should be OK. To use VPC
be sure to download the 64bit version (because you are running a 64bit OS).
Every thing you do in the guest XP will be 32bit.

Your terminology is fine -- VirtualPC actually only allows x86/32-bit
guests, x64/64-but guests are not permitted.

As long as Chartview navigation is happy in a virtual environment, this
setup should work nicely.

Re: virtualize on 64-bit?

Can anyone direct me to a URL with instructions how to do this? I thought
some sort of wizzard would come up after I installed Virtual PC, but there is
nothing. How do I start (install XP Pro)?

Re: virtualize on 64-bit?

well I'm trying to do the virtual machine thing. This is all new to me. The
partition seems to be formatting. There were some choices I had to make
where I had no idea what was meant. If I screw this whole thing up, can I
"undo" it all somehow?

Re: virtualize on 64-bit?

It seems to be hung up on the formating of the drive at 20%. Anyone know how
long this should take?

Re: virtualize on 64-bit?

You have to create a virtual machine and then install Windows. It's a
computer just like a physical one.

Re: virtualize on 64-bit?

Please tell us how much memory you allocated and how large a hard drive.
You should have mostly accepted the default choices. You can delete the
virtual machine and start over at any stage. When you Windows installed do
not activate it for a few days in case you want to do it over again.

Re: virtualize on 64-bit?

I'm not sure how to tell how much memory I allocated. The screen reads:
"...on 65531 MB disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi."
My hard drive is 320GB. It is still stalled at formating on 20%
