Since you've posted in a newsgroup dedicated to Microsoft VPC, I'm assuming
that's the virtualisation solution you're intending to use...

    > and how?
    1) Install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (download it free from Microsoft)

    2) Create a new virtual machine

    3) Install Windows XP on the new virtual machine

That might sound simplistic, but that's pretty much all there is to it as
    far as VPC is concerned.

What a curious question! What on earth makes you think it will crash your
    laptop...?

This is neither an XP nor a Vista newsgroup. This newsgroup discusses a
Microsoft program called Virtual PC. You can get help with Vista questions
at microsoft.public.windows.vista.general and with XP questions at
    microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

I suppose that someone may be unaware that when giving a virtual machine a
memory allocation that they are actually taking it from the host's reserve
and if they over allocated the VM RAM then the host machine could freeze
    from lack of adequate memory.......

    Brrr!!!!!

VPC wont start a VM if there isn't enough available RAM, so it wont
crash the machine in that case...

    Hi Tony,

Even though you have asked this question in a VPC forum, I am inclined to
assume that you would like to know if you can install Windows XP on your
    laptop.

The best person to answer your question would be your laptop manufacturer

If you have one of the new non-business laptops, then the laptop
manufacturer might inform you that they would not be able to make a claim if
your laptop would support Windows XP
In case, you may consider install Windows XP on your laptop. AND hope that
everything works fine. (Do ensure that you have the Windows Vista
installation CD with you/or the recovery console)

Once you have installed Windows XP, install SP2. Most of the hardware
    drivers would be installed.
However there might be some devices for which you would have to hunt on the
    internet for the drivers.
Hopefully, you should be able to install Windows XP with SP2 with all
    drivers.

Do understand that there might be some devices for which there might be NO
    windows XP drivers.
In such a case, you might have to develop your own device drivers or pay
someone who can develop these drivers.

    Best of luck!!
