You won't believe this, but you actually need to set up an environment
variable:

I don't believe it! For years I've been living with the "My Virtual
Machines" folder hidden, and with a shortcut inside it pointing to the
desired location!

This is much better.

No, it wasn't. This thread is about the default location of virtual
machines and how to change the default location. What you've posted above
has nothing to do with either the default location of the virtual machines
nor how to change said location. If one does change the default location
for virtual machines the shortcut location does not change.
Please try to get your facts straight before you start calling people names
and telling them to lighten up.
