Start the VM, then either drag and drop the ISO file on the CD-ROM
icon in the VPC taskbar, or right-click it and browse to the ISO.
There are detailed installation instructions on my website in my
TechRef PDF.

Using Windows Explorer you can drag the ISO file and drop it on the CD
icon in the bottom of the VPC guest window after it has been started.
THen go to the Action menu and reset the guest. It will now boot from
the ISO (provided the ISO is of a bootable CD).

Re: installing XP Pro

I am just about to try to install Windows X on a new VPC that I will create
and I have a couple of very basic questions on your excellent detailed
write-up:

1. creating the VPM looks straightforward but, if I boot from the CD, how do
I make sure that I am installing WinXP on the VPM and not on my C drive
(overwriting the existing OS)?
2. Assuming I am happy with the virtual hard drive I created as part of
creating the VPM, is there any reason for me to partition that drive?
3. Rather than having to install all of the security software on the VPM, am
I correct in assuming that I can simply turn off the internet access from the
VPM?
4. If I do not have internet access, what happens to the Windows activation
bit?
5. Where do I find the Virtual Machine Additions?

Make sure that all the XP installation screens/prompts occur within
the VM's window only. VPM?

Not sure what you are referring to here, but you really don't need to
do any extra partitioning for installing a VM.

You could. As long as you don't allow your VM access to Internet or
other possible means of infection you should be fine. You can get free
AV software from Grisoft and Avast that run fine in VMs too.

You'd have to use phone activation.

Once you've completed the OS installation and are on the VM's desktop,
click Action-->Install or Update Virtual Machine Additions and then
follow the prompts from the installer.

Steve & Colin,

Everything worked without a hitch and I have got the virtual machine up and
running. Thanks again for your help and patience.
