VirtualPC and wireless network adapter

Installed VirtualPC with Windows XP Pro on a Toshiba Satellite L40 using
Vista Home Premium (yes I know MS says it's not supported but hey, it
works!) that connects to the LAN via a Realtek 8187b wireless card. I've
installed the XP driver for that device in XP but it doesn't "see" it and
hence I can't access updates, or anything else.
Is there something I've missed here?

VPC creates a virtual machine. All the hardware inside a virtual
machine is separate and different from that of the host. No VM will
have a wireless card. Your VM has an Intel 21140 NIC, regardless of
your host's actual card.
You can still access the internet via your wireless card, you would
select it from the Network settings for the VM. However, your network
must provide it with an IP and all the rest of the relevant
information. It's not a problem if you have a router on your home
network, but if your host is connecting directly to the Internet, you
may need to use the Shared Networking setting instead to connect to
the Internet.

this is the bit I am struggling with - I can't see any setting anywhere
where I can select the Wireless adapter.
When I open Virtual PC Console I get a message telling me about the virtual
network adapters and giving the following instruction:
"To fix this problem, re-enable the Virtual Machine Network Services driver
on one or more ethernet adapters or reinstall Virtual PC."

So how do I re-enable the VM Network services driver? Is this something I do
on the host, or is it within VM itself?

I have a router, so that's not a problem!

I've just seen that in Settings-Network there should be FOUR drop-down
options for each virtual network device, the fourth being "Network adapter
on physical computer". If I go to Settings-Networking, that option is not
there. I only have THREE options - not connected, local and shared.

OK I fixed this by going to the properties of the network connection and
checking the box against Virtual Network driver.
Now when I fire up the VM I get this:

The network adapter with address "00:00:00:00:00:00" of virtual machine
"Windows XP" failed to initialize because the address is a null address.

How do I fix this?

Then you might need to update the network card driver on your host
machine for that card. It is common that the drivers do not work well
with VPC until some time has passed and the makers of the hardware
have updated their drivers.

It is the alpha-numeric value listed in the NetCfgInstanceId key data
field.
