| | Missing VM? For the past couple of days, when I start Virtual PC 2007 (6.0.192.0), I get the error window: ------------------------------------------------ At least one virtual machine added to the Virtual PC Console could not be found. Make sure each virtual machine's .vmc file has not been moved or deleted. Choose Remove to prevent Virtual PC from checking for these virtual machines while starting up. ------------------------------------------------ The two VMs I normally use are just fine, but I have about 20 VMs in the list. Without checking every single one, how can I tell which one is missing? Does VPC log this information somewhere? Thanks |

Start up VPC again, this time choose to remove the VPC(s) from the list. 4. Make note of the VPCs in the console. 5. Compare the lists from 2 and 4. I don't believe this is logged anywhere. -- Paul Adare MVP - Identity Lifecycle Manager http://www.identit.ca Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach. Those who cannot teach, HACK! |

The console list equals the shortcuts as you mention. But when VPC2007 says that a VM could not be found it actually means that the VMC file *pointed to* by the shortcut could not be found, so the work here is to check each and every shortcut and see if the vmc file it points to exists or not. A tedious endeavour at best.... 1. Go to the folder c:\ Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual PC\Virtual Machines 2. Rightclick each shortcut in turn and - Look at the Target property and check if the vmc file does really exist or not. But of course this means checking *each and every one*.... -- Bo Berglund (Sweden) |

| | RE: Missing VM? Thanks Paul, Steve and Bo. I ended up going to the VPC shortcut folder and right-clicking on each one to open with UltraEdit. Found there were 3 machines missing and THEN remembered I had moved them to another drive last week. DOH! I still think it would be nice if the VPC console would tell you which machines are missing when it finds them! Doesn't seem like rocket science to me... Thanks again, John |

Unlike Virtual Server, VPC apparently does not do any Event Viewer logging. VS has its own branch in EV. I even went so far as to search for any changed files after VPC threw the error. I set the search to search for any files changed that day, then sorted the list in descending order, looking for something that VPC might have updated. Where would I submit a change request/suggestion that VPC either displays which VMs are missing, or at least logs it somewhere? Thanks for the reply, John |

Discussion here should also bring it to the attention of the virtualization team since Ben Armstrong often reads the ng. Why don't you post the text of your suggestion to a new thread. In the past, posting here has been pretty useful. I will pick up the text and forward it for you to a another venue so that you get a couple of shots at getting it seen. |

I'll also post something about this in Ben's blog. |
