| | P2V XP before Vista? Hello, I want to install VISTA. I'm currently running XP and have YEARS of tuning invested in it. Is there a way to P2V my XP machine.... wipe it clean, install Vista (Ultimate), and then run my XP in a VM under Virtual PC?? I would love to be able to do that in order to migrate all of my settings, software, apps, etc, etc... That would allow me to continue to use my XP machine until I get things reinstalled under VISTA and become more familiar with it. Anyone ever do that before? Thanks, Troy |

| | Re: P2V XP before Vista? I did it recently for a friend who was moving to Vista. We simply did a full backup before reformatting the hard disk. She only wanted to save her data, not a running XP system. You should be able to do what yo wnt with Acronis True Image and Universal Restore. (ie backup XP, reformat and install Vista, install VPC, create a vm and restore the XP installation into it). Note that not everything will work under VPC as it did on the host. You can't access USB devices on the host, the CD/DVD is read only and the video card is pretty basic. Any programs which rely on specific hardware in the host will fail. Windows Easy Transfer in Vista does a pretty good job but you have to run the first bit before you trash your XP install, so you really need two physical machines. | | Re: P2V XP before Vista? I've run Windows Easy Transfer to a USB hard disk - it worked well, and I was able to restore my settings after. It's not perfect, but I figure it saved me at least a full day of tweaking. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/charlie.russel "Bill Grant" <not.available@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:O5fYqIe8IHA.3848@xxxxxx Quote: > I did it recently for a friend who was moving to Vista. This is *not* good news when you go and install Vista, because Vista is really only working well on newer types of hardware with resources like LOTS of RAM, fast CPU and video graphics card etc. You will probably be better off keeping the old XP system and buying a new PC with Vista. Ultimately you might try to do P2V of your existing XP system so you can dump the old hardware by running it as you suggest as a virtual machine under Vista. But that would not be Vista upgrade, it would be Vista on a new PC. -- Bo Berglund |

Just have done a >bunch of hardware upgrade. > hardware on your PC to the current state it is in while all the time keeping the installed XP, right? I guess you had to re-activate XP on some changes like the CPU change and you have possibly also switched MB during this time? Anyway, back to your original question: For VPC I think you would be disappointed in doing a conversion. However, I have actually a few months back used VMWare's converter to do P2V from an XP-Pro laptop when it was being replaced with a new one. The converter is a free download on VMWare's website. It took a while to run and it needed a second networked PC to do the conversion from. But even though the source was a HP laptop with lots of specific drivers and stuff, the image actually worked afterwards! I could start up my old laptop inside VMWare Player (also a free download). It took a bit of tweaking of the networking to get that as I needed, but basically it was no big problems. When it runs now it also has access to USB devices since VMWare (unlike MS) has provided support for transfering USB connections from the host into the guest to be used there. -- Bo Berglund |

Connectix the CTO said it could be added in a month, if any customer was willing to buy a couple thousand licenses, so in MS terms, that would run about 9-12months for implementation, testing, and security. -- Cheers, Steve Jain, Virtual Machine MVP http://vpc.essjae.com/ I do not work for Microsoft. |
