| | Newbie question I've been looking through documentation for Virtual PC 2007, and pretty much everything just says to create a virtual machine and voila, all your problems are solved. I'm trying to run a Windows 98 virtual machine on my Vista installation, but when I run the virtual machine, it hangs on DHCP until it finally gives me the message "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device." What "Boot Media" do I need? I don't have a floppy drive, so I can't just pop in a Win98 boot disk. Did I miss something when I was setting up my virtual machine? Any information would be appreciated. -- RickyTheFish |

What "Boot Media" do I need? just been assembled from the various parts and boots up for the first time. The very first thing you need to do is to actually *install* an operating system on the virtual machine. Like in a physical machine the hard disk is completely empty at this stage... You can install many flavours of Windows but also OS/2 or any Linux distribution. VPC2007 does not supply the installation media for these operating systems (how could it?). That is up to you... You might have been misled by the dialogue in the Virtual machine Wizard that asks which operating system you want to install. This dialogue merely serves to inform the Wizard which hardware features will be needed (for example how much RAM to assign and how big a hard disk to suggest). In no way does it install any operating system for you. Quote: >I don't have a floppy drive, so I can't just pop in a Win98 boot disk. and capture it in the virtual machine. A virtual floppy boot disk is available on Steve Jain's site: http://vpc.essjae.com/ This site also contain instructions on how to actually install Win98 including some readymade files to simplify things. You still need the Win98 CD (pysical or as an ISO image) and the Win98 license key.
