Virtual PC type app without admin rights?

Does anyone know if there's any "virtual PC" apps that can be
run on a limited user PC account?

Well, is Virtual PC actually already installed so you can use it? If it
is installed, you can run whatever VMs you create within it (and can
even get VMs from other sources, like Microsoft, to use in your
installed copy of VPC).

I mean a "virtual PC" type app to be installed and run on a limited account.

Of course I searched. No answers; hence my question.
Thanks, but that info doesn't answer the question.

BTW, I've put "virtual PC" in quotes because I don't literally mean the
Microsoft application named VirtualPC.

Looks promising, thanks for that!

But VMWare Server is the equivalent of Virtual PC: the server that runs
the VM. To run "Virtual PC" like VMs in VMWare Server, you will need to
get their converter program. You didn't want to install Virtual PC but
you're willing to install VMWare Server? So maybe what you really
wanted to ask is what alternatives there were to VPC.

Re: Virtual PC type app without admin rights?

I take it that you're trying to install and run a VPC-type app on a PC that
you don't have administrator rights to, as in a "work PC" that your IT
department has set you up on as a "limited user", or maybe a public PC like
at a library.

If so, then I would say, no there aren't any other VPC-type apps that can be
installed and run. If you can't install VPC, then you can't install
anything. That's why they're called "limited accounts", you're limited as
to what you can do. It has nothing to do with VPC, and everything to do
with user rights. You might find something that will run from a flash
drive, but not install to the hard drive.

I think he's trying to find a way around the restrictions on a work PC or a
library PC.

I wouldn't advise either. IT departments get upset, librarians ban you.

In either case, he won't have a user account to give him privileges to
install the software that runs the VM.

Correct. I keep reading that one shouldn't run their PC in admin mode for
security reasons, but that stops me running Virtual PC as a result. It
limits
the software one can use. So I'm trying to find a limited-user version (if
at
all) but if not, I'll have no choice but to keep using admin mode on my PC.

Re: Virtual PC type app without admin rights?

You should be able to run Virtual PC without admin rights, it's just
installing it that you need admin.

There is a "uniqueness" when running Vista as the host and trying to
use a copy protected CD that requires you to run as admin, but
otherwise, there shouldn't be a problem.
