USB Ports

By using Virtual PC I am trying to run Vista and Office 07 on the host and XP
with Office 03 on the virtual machine for training purposes.

I cannot get the virtual machine to see the USB ports meaning we can't get
online using our broadband dongles (needed for Outlook etc). A Google search
suggests that this is an ommision from Virtual PC but does anyone know a way
around this please?

Thank you

Re: USB Ports

There is no way around this; it is currently a design limitation, that I have been hoping Microsoft will correct for as long as I've been using Virtual PC 2007 (about a year now.) You could try another couple of free products that do support USB:

VMware Player, Virtual Machine, Virtual PC - VMware

VMware Server, Virtual Server Consolidation, Free Virtualization - VMware

I haven't tried the VMware server (which is used to build the virtual machine) on my Vista pc, but according to a friend of mine it works and I know it does because he built me a Vista Ultimate x64 virtual machine, even though it is intended to operate on a server. But I have experimented around with VMplayer a good bit with various pre-built Linux systems that I downloaded.

Re: USB Ports

Does your "broadband dongle" show up on the Host PC as a network adapter?
If so, I would think you would simply choose that as the network adapter for
the VM to use.

If the host has an Internet connection, you can set up the guest to
share that connection using ICS on the host. (It does not really matter how
that machine connects to the network.) It is similar to using ICS for two
physical machines only simpler. You do not need to install a second NIC in
the host for the "private" network. All you need is a Microsoft Loopback
Adapter installed in the host.

Re: USB Ports

VMWare Workstation 6 passes USB ports just fine on my Vista x64 host.
