| | Newbie questions I am just about to load my new pc. Here is what I want to do. Have two seperate HDD one with XP Pro and one with Vista. I have run my vista already and found it incompatible with some of my programs. But do not want to let Vista go. Can someone tell me the best way to set this up. I have looked at Virtual PC and think that is my best option. Hate to ask the stupid questions, but want to be sure. Do i install XP or Vista first? does it matter. When I load a program on say XP do i have to also load it onto vista too. I assume not, but assuming is not good with pcs LOL. My thinking is load XP on C:/ , then Virtual PC, then Vistaon E:/. Does that make xp my main os? Thanks for your time. Meredith |

Virtual PC allows you to run a second OS as an application. It is not a boot manager. Quote: > >When I load a program on say XP do i have to also load it onto vista too. If you want a program to be accessible in both OSes, you'd need to install it in each. Quote: > >My thinking is load XP on C:/ , then Virtual PC, then Vistaon E:/. You don't create a 2nd partition You can get more detailed info from my technical reference PDF for VPC at my website. -- Cheers, Steve Jain, Virtual Machine MVP http://vpc.essjae.com/ I do not work for Microsoft. |

| | Re: Newbie questions Ditch Vista. Keep XP. That way you don't need to trouble with double booting and running a VM. You will need another license for the Windows you load in to VirtualPC, are you willing to pay for one if you don't already have it?. | | Re: Newbie questions Right, I see what you mean. That is no problem I can install both on the one drive but will it take my vista "Upgrade" as a seperate os? | | Re: Newbie questions XP and Vista should (must?) go on seperate drives. VirtualPC is another story entirely. Whatever you install there requires a seperate licence key, seperate from the XP and Vista you are going to use. That is why you need a third license for whatever you run in VPC. I recently set up a similar system for a friend running Vista Ultimate x64 as the host. She runs computer classes for seniors and needs older versions of apps (like Office 2003) on XP as well as the current versions on Vista for compatibility with her students' own machines. The vm is set up to look like another machine on her local network and runs well. No problems so far. As Steve said, it depends on what you are having problems with in Vista. The vm emulates an old PC architecture with a fairly basic video card, for intance. |
