Virtualizing Windows Server 2003

Hi all !

Quick question. I have one version of MS Windows Server 2003 R2 Retail
version. I will be installing this 2003 version on Dell server soon. I am
also, planning to have Virtual PC Server installed. How many of Virtual
Windows Server 2003 R2 Retail version can I have licensed ? Thanks and
Congratulations for awesome community.

Depending on what you want to do, Virtual Server might be a better
option than Virtual PC.

Which version of server do you have? If its the standard version, you
are only licensed for the host PC.
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...whitepaper.doc

Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition
Each software license allows you to run, at any one time, one instance
of the server software in a physical OS environment and up to four
instances of the server software in virtual OS environments on a
particular server.

Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition (licensed based on the
number of physical processors in the server)

After the appropriate number of licenses are acquired and assigned,
you may run
o One instance of the server software in the physical OS
environment, and
o Any number of instances of the server software in virtual OS
environments

Thanks for your quick response Steve !

I am running Windows Server 2003 Standart Version. I am planning to deploy
this server as AD, File and Print Server. Those up 4 Virtual 2003 Server I
have plans to deploy as test environment of new release of our internal
application.

If you have tha standard edition, then you do not have 4 licenses,
that is only for the enterprise version.

Re: Virtualizing Windows Server 2003

You can virtualize it, you just need licenses...
