Virtual PC doesn't support, and wont run, 64-bit guests.

Virtual Server also doesn't support, or run, 64-bit guests.
The only Microsoft product that supports 64-bit guests is Hyper-V.
VMWare has some 64-bit guest support, as well as a couple of other
products...

Help you do what? Virtual Server does not support 64-bit guests. You need
to install a 32-bit OS in the guest, or use some other virtualization
software if you must use a 64-bit OS in the guest.

64 bit and I assumed I could try it out on VirtualPC. Everyone is moving, or
has moved already, to Vista 64 bit (judging from the forums I post in) so I
find it a bit strange that VirtualPC won't support it. I have never
installed Vista Ultimate 64bit. The disk is just sitting here. I'd like to
try it and and trying Vista was a main reason for Microsoft making VirtualPC
free. I am trying Vista Ultimate 32 on virtual PC but I would not use it on
a new machine.

Nothing has been announced one way or the other.
Not everyone is moving, Vista32 still outnumbers 64 bit by quite a

it's just not an advantage yet.
But 64-bit use is getting more and more widespread...

Another way to test out an OS is multi-booting. Less convenient than doing it in
a virtual machine, but the new OS will run natively on the machine.
If you want to this route I would recommend the excellent BootIt NG.

there will be an MS solution.
Both VMW Workstation and VirtualBox can both handle 64bit VMs.
However, you're really not going to gain anything by running a 64bit
version of Vista in a VM. Why? You're not taking advantage of the
extra memory if you're running a 32bit host OS. Driver issues for x64
Vista, not relevant in a VM, since you aren't installing the drivers
for the actual physical hardware anyway.
The only thing you'd really be able to gain from this is to determine
if older and/or custom programs will run in a 64bit environment.
