| | Re: Virtual Server 2005 R2 Can4t Add x64 operating system Virtual Server also doesn't support, or run, 64-bit guests. The only Microsoft product that supports 64-bit guests is Hyper-V. VMWare has some 64-bit guest support, as well as a couple of other products... -- Bob Comer On Tue, 16 Sep 2008 07:26:00 -0700, ADRIAN RIBAS <ADRIANRIBAS@xxxxxx> wrote: Quote: >Thank Robert > >I have installed Virtual Server 2005 R2 > > >"Robert Comer" wrote: > Quote: >> Virtual PC doesn't support, and wont run, 64-bit guests. >> >> -- >> Bob Comer <Microsoft MVP Windows - Virtual Machine> >> >> >> >> >> On Tue, 16 Sep 2008 07:08:01 -0700, ADRIAN RIBAS <ADRIAN >> RIBAS@xxxxxx> wrote: >> Quote: >> >I'm Attempting to load an x64 operating system, then appears this message: >> > >> >This CPU is not compatible with x64 mode. | | Re: Virtual Server 2005 R2 Can4t Add x64 operating system Help you do what? Virtual Server does not support 64-bit guests. You need to install a 32-bit OS in the guest, or use some other virtualization software if you must use a 64-bit OS in the guest. Everyone is moving, or has moved already, to Vista 64 bit (judging from the forums I post in) so I find it a bit strange that VirtualPC won't support it. I have never installed Vista Ultimate 64bit. The disk is just sitting here. I'd like to try it and and trying Vista was a main reason for Microsoft making VirtualPC free. I am trying Vista Ultimate 32 on virtual PC but I would not use it on a new machine. |

I don't personally run 64-bit on any of the user PC's I control, it's just not an advantage yet. But 64-bit use is getting more and more widespread... -- Bob Comer On Thu, 18 Sep 2008 20:44:07 -1000, "Melelina" <melelina@xxxxxx> wrote: Quote: > >"Robert Comer" <bobcomer-removeme-@xxxxxx> wrote in message >news:usfvc4p4dabgh30t9mujo54be5m6bam3u2@xxxxxx Quote: >> Virtual PC doesn't support, and wont run, 64-bit guests. >> >> -- >> Bob Comer <Microsoft MVP Windows - Virtual Machine> >> >> >> >> >> On Tue, 16 Sep 2008 07:08:01 -0700, ADRIAN RIBAS <ADRIAN >> RIBAS@xxxxxx> wrote: >> Quote: >>>I'm Attempting to load an x64 operating system, then appears this message: >>> >>>This CPU is not compatible with x64 mode. Less convenient than doing it in a virtual machine, but the new OS will run natively on the machine. If you want to this route I would recommend the excellent BootIt NG. -- David Wilkinson Visual C++ MVP |

I am trying Vista Ultimate 32 on virtual PC but I would not use it on >a new machine. > there will be an MS solution. Both VMW Workstation and VirtualBox can both handle 64bit VMs. However, you're really not going to gain anything by running a 64bit version of Vista in a VM. Why? You're not taking advantage of the extra memory if you're running a 32bit host OS. Driver issues for x64 Vista, not relevant in a VM, since you aren't installing the drivers for the actual physical hardware anyway. The only thing you'd really be able to gain from this is to determine if older and/or custom programs will run in a 64bit environment. -- Cheers, Steve Jain, Virtual Machine MVP http://vpc.essjae.com/ I do not work for Microsoft. |
