OEM XP Install Problems

I have a Thinkpad T60 running Vista Business as the host. I also have the
OEM T60 factory CDs for XP. I have setup the VIC and run the install from
the CDs (called Rescue and Recovery) choosing reinstall to original factory
specifications. Once the install has finished and I restart the VIC I get a
BSOD or the boot process keeps restarting. Any thoughts on what may be
happening appreciated.

VIC?

You can't install an OEM version of Windows in a VM. It's a violation
of the license agreement, the VM is not the "hardware" its licensed
for. Also, most OEM versions of Windows are crippled to prevent them
from being installed on anything but the correct hardware...this is
likely the situation you're facing.

Re: OEM XP Install Problems

Thanks for the reply. The hardware is the hardware for that OEM XP set...
the T60 comes with either XP or Vista. Since I have a license for both Vista
and XP, there should not be a license problem. I guess even though the VPC
is running on the correct hardware, the OEM XP may see the hardware
'through' the VPC differently.

The hardware in a VM is completely different than the host's hardware.
The only thing that remains the same in the VM is the CPU, everything
else will be different from the host.

Re: OEM XP Install Problems

The XP license that shipped with your IBM is for use on the IBM only, if you
are setting up a VM on the IBM that is not the same thing as installing the
OS on the IBM. The VM is a separate machine, it needs it's own OS license,
OEM provided recovery media are for use only on the machine they came with,
not in VM's.

Thank you for a very concise overview of my problem. You are definitely not
plain and I think your brain cells are not on vacation.

That is not true. The CDRom is the host's CDrom. The Floppy drive is the
host's floppy drive.

Re: OEM XP Install Problems

To a point, even if the host has a DVD reader or writer in it, all that gets
emulated is a CDRom.

If we want to get really pedantic, then my statement still stands.
You always get a floppy drive in a VM, regardless if the host has one
or not.
You always get a DVD-ROM in a VM, regardless of what's on the host,
none, CD, CDRW, DVDRW, etc.
