Installing Operating system in virtual PC

I just downloaded and installed Virtual PC 7 on my new pc running Windows XP.
All went fine until it came to installing the operating system I want to use
(WIN95). The instructions said that if the operating system I want to install
is not listed I should use the closest one from the drop down list which I
did. Then when it comes time for it to read my install CD it just sits
there. When I hit enter it just recycles to the same point again.

Someone told me that it is NOT possible to install an operating system other
than the ones in the drop down menu. Is it true that the installation will
only work if the installation cd for the operating system is identical to the
one I chose in the download menu?

    Help!!!!

Most Win95 CDs are not bootable, so you need a boot disk to start the
    installation and prepare the VHD.

No, totally and completely wrong. The ONLY selection that makes any
difference is regarding Vista installs. If you're installing Vista,
you need to select it from the OS list for the proper virtual hardware
to be added. Everything else is just guidelines.

You can get everything you need to do a successfully Win95 install
from my website...see my sig for the link.

Re: Installing Operating system in virtual PC

Thank you so much for clearing this up. I'll try doing it with WIN98. I am
trying to install some old software that is 16bit, and will NOT install at
all on my new PC running XP. I was told a Virtuall PC is the solution.
Would I be better off using WIN98 or WIN2000?

Also, is it necessary to install the "Virtual Machine Additions " ? And how
    do I do that?

I really appreciate your help on this.

Either is fine. W2K will probably perform better in a VM.

Yes, the benefits are significant. After you install the OS, from the
VMs menu, click Action, then Install/Update VM Additions.
