format virtual hard drive

I followed the wizard to create a WIN98 Virtual PC, but no matter what I do I
always get the message that the hard drive has not been fomratted. I never
got the opportunity to specify a format, and obviously it did not do it
automatically. What might I be doing wrong?

You need to boot from a floppy disk, partition the drive and then
format it.
Check out my TechRef PDF on my site. It'll give you everything you
need.

Installing an operating system on a virtual machine is *EXACTLY THE SAME* as
installing an operating system on a physical machine - there is no
difference, as far as the operating system is concerned...

Specifically, for Windows 98, most CDs weren't bootable so you need to:

a) boot from a boot floppy disk with CD drivers (unless your copy of Windows
98 comes on floppy disks)

b) partition the virtual hard disk using the FDISK command

c) format the newly created partition on the virtual hard disk using the
FORMAT command

d) run the SETUP command from the Windows 98 media.

You can get everything you need from Steve Jain's site:

Re: format virtual hard drive

I just downloaded the Instructions for the Virtual PC off your site and love
it. It is SO much better then anything I was able to find at MS or their
help files. This cleared everything up for me. Thanks!
