printer setup

I followed the instructions from Steve Jain (which were great) to get my
virtual pc loaded and running, but there was no mention about how to print to
my local printer (XP on Host) from the virtual PC.

Can anybody help?

Re: printer setup

Just the same way that you would print from any networked machine. Share
the printer on the host and set up a networked printer link in the guest.

The guest does not automatically see hardware attached to the host.

Re: printer setup

OK, but I don't know the steps involved in doing so. Could please provide
more details. I'm not as well informed on how to do things like that so so
many others.

thanks

Re: printer setup

I presume that you have never had a networked machine before.

This really has nothing to do with VPC. This is standard network sharing.

To see how to share a printer on the host machine, look in help on the
host. To see how to set up a printer on the guest, look in help in the guest
OS.

Re: printer setup

You are correct. Could you perhaps see your way clear to explain how to do
it or direct me to step by step directions? I would really appreciate it. I
tried to find something on Steve jain's site, but coudn't find anything about
how to set up for printing.

Thanks

As I said before, this really has nothing to do with VPC. You use
exactly the same procedures as you would use to access a printer on one
machine from a second machine. The help files will guide you, or search for
info on Windows file and printer sharing.

The first thing to check is your network setup. Can you see the vm
from the host and vice versa? Can you share a file on the host and access
it from the guest?

When you know how to share a file, try sharing a printer. It is
basically the same procedure. When the printer is shared you should be able
to see it in Network Places (or whatever it was called in W98). Try
connecting to this printer. If it won't work that way, try installing the
printer from Control Panel.

If all else fails, the windows 98 networking newsgroup is still active.

Re: printer setup

I know you're trying to help, but if I knew HOW to check a newtork setup, I
mgiht not be having problems. I was not aware I could share a file on the
host and access it on the from the guest.

I guess I'll look for help elsewhere, because no matter how often you tell
me how simple it is to do, that will not tell me where to go and where to
click in order to setup sharing! Wouldn't it have been easier just so say go
to ....... and click on ......

Thanks anyway.

Here's an article regarding printer sharing:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...utt_july2.mspx

once you've done that, you need to connect to it in Win98. IIRC, you
should be able to do it via the New Printer Wizard...I haven't set up
a Win98 printer in years

Pete W,
this is a highly technical newsgroup concerned with the virtualization
of computers using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. It is really not a
newsgroup for administrative or usage questions concerning all the
different operating systems that are possible to install in a virtual
machine managed by VPC2007....

Please consider that there are dozens if not more operating systems
that can run in a VPC20076 guest so asking about how to set up
specific items in one of these operating systems is basically off
topic. But people here are very helpful so you might still get help or
hints, but do not expect a click-by-click treatise for basic functions
in the operating system you choose to install.
There is a much better chance of help if you ask in a newsgroup for
that particular operating system.

In your case the problem is twofold:
1) How to supply the virtual machine with a network adapter that will
be capable of communicating with the host, another guest running in
VPC2007 or the Internet? This is an ON-Topic question here.
The anser is to use the default setting in VPC2007, namely to link the
guest network adapter to the host physical adapter. This will create a
NIC inside the guest that has the same connectivity as the host NIC
has. Then you are on your own to go from there.

2) How to use the networking capabilities thus supplied to the virtual
machine to accomplish some operating system specific task such as file
sharing or printer sharing or using a network printer? This is a kind
of question best asked in the ng specific for the operating system you
have installed. It is OT here, but you might still get some help....
But do not expect it or require it! This is a peer-to-peer ng and the
people who dwell here do so to discuss virtualization peculiarities on
a technical level....
