"Not running on supported OS"

It's been a while since I ran on VPC, and when I start
now, I get a pane saying "You are not running on a
supported Operating System". I don't recall getting
that warning earlier this year. I'm running Windows 98
as a VPC, under Windows XP Home/SP2. What is it trying
to tell me?

Where do I find the "Microsoft Virtual PC Help" that
it refers me to?

Thank you.

Exactly what it sounds like - that you are running VPC on an unsupported
host OS.

The supported host OS for VPC 2007 are Vista Ultimate, Vista Enterprise,
Vista Business, Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition, XP Professional,
XP Tablet PC Edition.

XP Home is not a supported host OS. However, all this means is that it isn't
supported - it will still work...

In the VPC console, click Help, Virtual PC Help

Nothing to do with the service pack - XP Home is not a supported host OS...

Funny. A number of months ago, when I set up the VPC, and
Gary helped me update 98 in the VPC, I never got that
message. If I did, I'd have asked about it then. I
wonder why it's warning me now. Oh, well.....it does
work.

Seems like you're confusing hosts and guests - they are not the same
thing...

A host is an operating system on which Virtual PC is installed.

A guest is an operating system running in a virtual machine.

XP Home and Windows 98 are supported *guests* - they are not supported
*hosts*...

Open up the help file and have a look at the topic entitled "Evaluating
requirements".

Mark:

He *is* talking about the host. Maybe he was warned when he first installed VPC
on XP Home, but his recollection is that he was not previously warned every time
he started it. But now he is.

David is quite correct. I have no recollection of having been warned
at all. But it works on my XP/Home, so I'll just continue to ignore
it. It don't seem to be broke, so it don't need no fixin'.

RE: "Not running on supported OS"

Don't mind, if the product works on your OS.
You just should understand, that in such context "supported" means, that
developer *guarantee*, that product works on listed platforms; but
"compatible" usually lists strict list of compatible platforms (where the
product can work) regardless supported platforms.
