Yes, but somehow the virtual machines should "see" a NIC connected on them. I mean, don't they need any drivers for these virtual NICs?

If a NIC in a vm is set to use Local Only it is in fact using a
virtual network, not a physical network. For that reason is does not matter
whether the host machine has a physical NIC card or not.

The vm has an emulated NIC and it certainly needs driver software in the
OS for this NIC. It uses the same driver whether it is connected to a
physical NIC or to Local Only. The difference is that, if it is connected to
a physical NIC, Virtual Machine Network Services works with the NIC driver
in the OS running on the host to transfer data to and from the physical
network.
