| | Mouse problem I don't know if this is a Vista problem or a VPC limitation or a misconfiguration on my part. I have more experience with VMWare Workstation where I have not encountered this problem but then I do not have Vista on VMWare. The problem is that I cannot right click on a url in the Vista guest machine address bar of any browser and then paste in a forum text box, Outlook Express 6 email or newsgroup post, or in the address bar on my host machine which runs XP ProSP2. This is very irritating. Is this a limitation of VPC or Vista or what? Any fix or workaround? |

I posted some info on this a while back, i.e. how to determine if you're running Vista in admin mode, etc. With VMWare, they run an authentication service that handles this. -- Cheers, Steve Jain, Virtual Machine MVP http://vpc.essjae.com/ |

I'm trying to copy from Vista to XP Pro where I also run as Admin. So, there shouldn't be a problem with rights in Vista since the host machine runs XP and is running from an Admin account. I can copy a url from the host XP machine and paste it in the Vista guest with no problems but I can't copy from the Vista machine to the host XP machine. I unhid the hidden Admin account in Vista. I wonder if I can copy a url from that account to XP... Quote: > With VMWare, they run an authentication service that handles this. Quote: |

I launched Firefox 3 on the Vista guest via "run as administrator" and could copy a url from one of the tabs to a forum reply box on my host XP machine. Surely, I do not need to remember to always launch my browsers in Vista in this manner? How do I make this permanent? I switched to the default hidden admin account that I unhid some time ago. There I can copy urls and paste to the host XP machine from Firefox withOUT needing to remember to set Firefox before starting it to "run as administrator". I've been telling others that anyone wanting to run as admin on Vista, like we all do on XP, has to unhide the hidden admin account and use it. I just wish I had known that before I installed Vista and naively thought that the psuedo admin account I created during the install was a real admin account. It isn't and I have just proved that again. Quote: |

This drives me nuts. I think the problem is VPC not admin rights in Vista since I always run as admin. Quote: |

Only _the_ administrator account will run an install without requiring extra privilege (because other admin accounts normally run without admin privilege. You are only elevated when required). It is safest to use "run as" if you are in doubt. Some apps which are not UAC aware will not prompt you for elevation but will simply fail. |

I have been >told by Microsoft that there is no difference between the hidden default >admin account and my admin account as far as rights go. You are saying >Microsoft is wrong? because I thought that was what I was setting up when I installed Vista. I hate to have to move everything now from my admin account to the default admin account because of this idiocy. I have accomplished my purpose in installing Vista on a virtual machine and that was to learn about Vista. Now I know if I ever get a machine with Vista (probably not) that I must immediately unhide the default admin account and use it as my account if I want to not have a heart attack using Vista. I don't know what you are referring to about "installs"....installs of what? I said that I cannot copy/paste a URL from Vista to XP. That has nothing to do with running installs...of an OS? Further, I immediately disabled UAC. I can't stand that thing. I would NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER USE IT. I have never had a program need "elevation" to install it on Vista because I install it from an admin account. I CANNOT copy/past a URL from the DEFAULT ADMIN account either. THIS PROBLEM IS A VPC problem not a problem with security in Vista. As soon as I have the money to upgrade to Workstation 6.5, I intend to use VMWare Converter and convert this machine to VMWare. |
