Vista - User Log in ok but...

Virtual pc running on Vista, with virtual xp os.

Has been working fine but now :

I can start the virtual pc

OS loads, and login screen appears.

Can log in, user files loading... completes but screen is empty except for
the action etc. headers at top of screen.

Suggestions welcome.

1) Might the machine have become infected with a virus or other malware?

2) Does it work if you start XP in safe mode?

3) Does it respond to a "virtual" Ctrl-Alt-Del? If so, can you start the
Task Manager and kick off a new explorer process...?

The problem accured after a "Forced removal" of aan item found with and AV
program.

I can get a Ctrl-Alt-Del from the Virtual.
