VPC07 and Netware

Here's my crazy setup for a customer. He is using an older Novell server with
98 workstations running netware. SHORT story, he will not give up 98 for MANY
reasons but new software that he subscribes to will not support 98 anymore.
In comes MS VPC, installed it on new comp with xp pro, installed 98se on vpc,
installed latest netware on xp, installed last version of netware to support
98. XP side interfaces with novell perfect, 98 side looked like it did but it
is only "partially" connected. That is it can see a few folders on server but
does not see everything, can see printers but comes back saying it does not
have admin privileges to use them when trying to install them. Basicaly its
not fully connected. Suspect its to do with ipx and VPC.

Novell? Win98? Shudder.

What kind of networking are you using in the VM? I would think you would
need to use the real network adapter option, not NAT Shared Networking.

If you are already using this then I have no idea, it's been over 10 years
since I've touched a Novell network. Thank God.

Re: VPC07 and Netware

Yep I'm using the real NIC. Even tried installing a second NIC and making VM
use it. But that did'nt work because XP\Netware side must be communicating
on both and confusing the Novell Server when the 98\Netware side
communicates. Perhaps blocking all access besides VM on the second adapter
using Windows Firewall would solve it?

Does the XP host actually need to connect to/use Netware? If not, try
uninstalling the Netware client stuff from the XP host and just let the 98
client do its thing.

Re: VPC07 and Netware

Hmm thats a good question. I'm sure the customer would "prefer" to have
Novell on XP side but if I could share the Mapped Directories from 98 and map
them to XP, and the same for the printers; he might me satisfied with that...
I hope :|
Or is that even possible?

That shouldn't matter. To the Novell server the WinXP host and the
Win98 client will look like two separate computers, NICs will have
different MAC addresses.
Make sure the host's firewall is not causing a problem with the guest
connectivity.

Not sure of 98, but have xp host with 3 xp VPC all working on novell with no
problems, all with full access.

Single network card, each VM had a unique IP on our network.

If I get a minute, I can try to install 98 and see what happens

Re: VPC07 and Netware

It makes a considerable amount more sense to upgrade the PC's to XP and run
the 98 systems as virtual. Since the Novell box is so old, I'm guessing its
4.11 or so? Upgrading the server isnt going to give any additional support
for 98 but Novell dropped its IPX protocol after 4.x. I'm not sure if the 98
client requires IPX or not. They may have released an IP only client.
Moving to an IP only network couldnt hurt.
