Windows 7?

Hi,

I was wondering if there is any way to get to look at windows 7 and test it
in a VPC?

Will there be any additions being beta tested for it or anything? I'm just
really nosey. ;oP

To get Win7 you probably have to get into the beta, though some events
will give test copies out. (PDC did this week)

The current additions (13.820 or 13.803) work fine with the current
released level of Win7.

Hi,

Thank you for the swift reply. :-)

So, if I managed to get a hold of one of these test copies they were giving
away, how would I install the additions - do I select vista or anything?

I am using VPC 6.0.156.0 - do I need to update anything? From the look of it
I have missed the SP1 - is it essential to install that first?

Is there any way to find out where or apply to future giveaways of windows
7?

Sorry for all the questions.

No problem!

Same way you do with any version, select the menu item to install the
additions and it'll autostart and install just like normal.

When setting up the VM itself, select Vista as the OS.

I'll have to get back to you later on that, none of the PC's I use VPC
is available at the moment.

Not any that I know of.

Hi,

I managed to find a copy of windows 7 online - Is that legal to use?

I didn't try and enter any licence keys or anything that would possibly
break the EULA as far as I could work out.

I updated VPC to SP1 before trying anything - for any one reading later you
need to reboot your computer to get any network functionality back, would
have been nice of it mentioned this. ;-P

The additions installed fine so , as long as I'm ok on the license thing, I
look forward to having a nosey to see what has changed. :-)

Not knowing where you got it I can't say for sure, but if it was a
bittorent site, a definite no is in order.

That's not always the case, but sometimes the network drivers don't
handle it right.

I don't know the real legality of the downloaded version, but the guy
who uploaded it could have problems.

Since Microsoft isn't distributing Windows 7 freely on the Internet, I
don't see how this Windows 7 could in any way be a legal copy.
I don't think the "public" beta has started yet.

Oh Bum, :-(

I got it from a newsgroup - never bothered with bit torrent but it still
sounds as though it would be illegal for me to keep playing with this.

I was quite liking it too.

Is there any way to find out who to contact in regards to the recent
distribution of the OS to the (I assume) journos and tech guys?

Probably couldn't hurt to ask - longshot I know.

That's my take on it, but the guy who uploaded it is the most in
trouble if they ever catch him.

It most definitely hasn't, it hasn't even started beta yet, much less
public.

Yep.

Give it some time, it'll be much further along once it gets to the
public beta, you can't really count on what's available now to
represent what the end product will be. Just from the PDC keynote, we
know there are things coming that aren't in the distributed version.
