vista home premium host, windows 2003 server guest .. No audio?RealTek? Soundblaster 16?

Running Virtual PC 6.0192 (I think that's the latest 2007 version)

The host is a Gateway GT5662 Quad Core running Vista Home Premium

The guest is a Windows 2003 Server.

I'm trying to get audio to work.. I've read a few posts where people
have had success with an XP host.

I've installed Virtual machine additions.

Nothing I've tried has worked.

My first question is why my stock windows 2003 server install into a
VM installs a Sound blaster 16 device?

My first attempt was to install the RealTek HD drivers from GateWay
into the Guest.. seemed to install fine.. but no luck.

I then went a found a driver for REalTek that said it supported window
2003.

I read a post that said to take my XP drivers (I know not applicable)
and simple point the Sound Blaster 16 to them.. but those drivers were
not found in Vista Home Premium.

On the RealTek drivers I found a w2k3 directory, but attempt to
install said my service pack was higher than that.

Because that's what a virtual machine emulates.

Because that's the audio hardware that VPC emulates.

Did you start the audio service in Server 2003? This is disabled by
default. You have to do this on a real install also, this is not a VPC
issue. If you want to change the theme you have to start the theme service
also.

Windows Audio Service says it's started.

What drivers do you recommend?

Right now, the soundblaster says drivers are not installed. I've
attempted to install RealTek HD drivers on the Virtual with no
success.

Thanks for the valuable info.

SoundBlaster 16 drivers. Unfortunately since your host is Vista, you won't
have any. I got mine working because I have an XP VM also. So I did the
"Update Drivers" in the Server 2003 VM Device manager, and then pointed the
installer to C:\Windows\inf folder on my XP VM. This will find the correct
inf file, then you need to point to C:\Windows\system32 and/or
C:\Windows\system32\drivers when it says it can't find the sys and dll
files.

The XP driver files will work in Server 2003, but you will get a warning
about "unsigned drivers". Click OK and they will install.
