XP plug-in

hi,

i want to apply a 3rd party XP plug-in to a dv edit software Adobe Premiere
3. the software is now Vista compatible, so i can run it on my Dell Vista,
but the plug-in is still only XP compatible

can i therefore create a virtual XP o/s through Virtual PC, so that the
plug-in thinks it's being run on XP please?

or will VPC automatically detect the XP plug-in and allow it to function?

many thanks

Does the software have any mimimum hardware requirements? Remember that a
virtual machine won't see *ANY* of the host machine's hardware directly -
other than the CPU and RAM, all virtual hardware is emulated. E.g. your host
machine may have the whizziest graphics card in the world - your virtual
machines will still "see" an S3 Trio...

You can, so long as you have a legal copy of XP...

Virtual PC does only one thing - it creates virtual machines. Until you
install an operating system, nothing will happen, just like with a physical
machine.

When you install software (operating system and applications) on a virtual
machine, generally speaking that software has not the slightest notion that
it's being installed on a virtual machine as opposed to a physical machine -
it has no need to know this. So, if your virtual machine is running Windows
XP, and application software which you subsequently install on it will
believe that it's being installed on Windows XP - because it is...

Re: XP plug-in

Vista has nothing to do with your upgrade disk, if you want to use your XP
upgrade license on a VM, you have to have a qualifying OS (Win 98, ME etc)
to prove you can use the upgrade license, doesn't matter if your installing
on a hardware PC or a virtual one, the license agreement still applies,
Windows Vista is not a qualifying product for your XP Upgrade, nor will the
XP installation in your VM even know it's there.

If the dv plugin has something to do with video editing and effects
you may be disappointed by the capabilities of the virtual machine
graphics card. It is a 4 Mb S3 Trio-64 video graphics emulation and it
does not support 24 bit color, nor can you install DirectX.

A virtual computer is a totally separate PC so whatever runs in it
will see the operating system inside the virtual machine only so in
this case it sees XP.

There are other limitations also, for example the virtual machine
cannot see any USB devices because no USB subsystem is emulated in
it....

And concerning your additional posting:
An XP upgrade CD coming with a computer is not licensed to be used
inside a virtual machine and most likely it will not work if it is
BIOS locked like many of them are. You need a legitimately purchased
retail CD and license for the virtual machine...

Re: XP plug-in

oops

all i want to do is run the xp plug-in

well, seeing as Premiere 3 is now Vista compatible, i suppose there's
nothing for it but to install it in the Vista and see if the plug-in likes it?

it's either that or acquiring an entire XP pc (software-fast enough) to run
the plug-in?

thanks

Thanks again Bo

honestly don't know what the consequences would be running Abobe Premiere 3
through the virtual 4 Mb S3 Trio-64 video graphics card?

am not using HD or 3D graphics, just home movie type footage - the main
drain is always on the CPU with big dv file playback, so there wouldn't be an
issue there (AMD64/Athlonx2)

this is why i am attempting to relocate the dv editing from my old XP P4 to
the newer Vista AMDx2

Why does it support 32 bit color (and 16 bit) but not 24?

Also, why does the monitor appear to be running at 75hz? It is an LCD that
is capable of only 60hz.

ric:

There is another way of having two operating systems on a single physical
computer; multi-booting. It is mot as convenient as using a virtual machine
because you have to reboot in order to switch between the OS's. But if you need
to use XP only occasionally, it might be a workable solution for you.

Of you do this route I would recommend a 3rd party boot manager such as the
excellent (and inexpensive) BootIt NG.

Just as with a virtual machine, you need a valid license for each OS.
