Using VM for Training Exercise

Hi folks,

I want to save a Virtual Machine
settup with Sharepoint, before I start a sharepoint training
exercise. I want to be able to revert back to the original
sharepoint VM before the training. Can I just
Copy the VM's file to another spot, and copy it back (overwrite it) later.
And if yes, what is the correct file to copy.

Thanks in advance...

Yes.

The virtual machine's virtual hard disk(s). Select the VM in the console and
click the Settings button to find out their location...

Yes, you can do that, and the correct file to copy is the virtual hard
drive (.vhd)

You could also just enable undo disks, and after you finish the
training exercise, just shut down the VM and discard changes, that
will put it back to what it was before.

Re: Using VM for Training Exercise

Thank you Rae.

My Virtual Machine, I named Sharepointbox. Creating the
Virtual Machine, created a folder named sharepointbox with the contents:

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\eband.MARO\My Documents\My Virtual
Machines\SHAREPOINTBOX

11/10/2008 01:31 PM <DIR> .
11/10/2008 01:31 PM <DIR> ..
11/06/2008 05:15 PM 5,277,986,304 SHAREPOINTBOX Hard Disk.vhd
11/10/2008 09:42 AM 12,788 SHAREPOINTBOX.vmc
11/10/2008 01:28 PM 270,796,288
VirtualPCUndo_SHAREPOINTBOX_0_0_0_14405211102008.vud

Do I need to back up all 3 files ( .vhd, .vmc, .vud).

And restore by overwriting all 3?

As previously advised by Bob and me, you need to back up the virtual hard
disk (.vhd) file(s).

Re: Using VM for Training Exercise

I had problem with that when switching between users (in guest OS) and
clicking on X (terminating the window).
The next time I started VM there was message "Windows did not shutdown
correctly).
I had that already a few times recently.

Re: Using VM for Training Exercise

I haven't seen that, so I don't know what might causing it.

Re: Using VM for Training Exercise

Are you switching between users? My guess is not.
It looks to me noone in this group does.
My other post dated November 9th was never responded to.

VERY rarely, but I always either shut down the VM's OS, or do a save
state.

But I'm not so sure this isn't expected behavior, click the x to close
the window in VPC is just like puling the plug on your PC, it doesn't
shut down properly in that case, especially if there is more than one
user logged on, so it's going to boot up just like you describe.

I agree with Bob that the best idea would be to use undo disks. If you
want to start from a "clean" state you could discard changes after a
session.

You really need to shut down between sessions, not just close the vm
window.
