    Not sure I understand -- a VM wont see the lid close action from the
    hardware, so it wouldn't do any good.

    Okay, I get it, but I don't know how it can be done. Perhaps you
    should be asking this question in a general OS, or enterprise
    deployment type forum, as they would be more experienced at that kind
    of an issue. You're prototyping the deployment image in a VM, but the
    issue really isn't a VM issue, but a deployment issue.
