Install Virtual Machine Additions

I am having difficulty installing the Virtual Machine Additions. I am
following the Help instructions "To install Virtual Machine Additions for a
Windows operating system" but I run into a problem when I get to the part
where I click on "the Action menu of the virtual machine".

I am clicking on the Action menu of the Virtual PC Console. When I do that,
there is no "Install or Update Virtual Machine Additions" option. The only
options on the Action menu are:

Close...
Pause
Reset
Remove (grayed out)
Settings
Properties

My Host OS is Vista x64 w/ 4GB RAM.
Guest OS is Windows XP Professional (2.5 GB RAM allocated).

Not the console action menu, but the menu on the running VM is where
you need to go. (The VM must be running to install the additions, and
you use it's action menu.)

Re: Install Virtual Machine Additions

I suspected that was the case but I cannot figure out where the Action menu
is on the running VM.

The VM must be in a "window", not full screen. You will then see the
Action, Edit, etc menus across the top.

Re: Install Virtual Machine Additions

If you're running the VM full screen, you wont be able to see it, hit
<Host>-<Enter> (<Right Alt> defaults to <Right Alt> if you haven't
changed it)

You should then be able to see the menu bar.

Re: Install Virtual Machine Additions

I am running the VM in Windowed mode. When I press Right-Alt/Enter, it
changes from full screen to windowed mode but, in windowed mode, there is no
Menu bar. The title on the window box says "Windows XP Professional -
Microsoft Virtual PC 2007".

Any suggestions as to how to get the menu bar to display?

Well that's weird. Try pressing Right Alt + I in windowed mode. That is
the keyboard shortcut to install the VM additions.

Actually Right Alt + I works in full screen mode also. I just tried it.

Thanks, Bob. Right Alt-I worked just fine. VM Machine Additions installed
like a charm. No clue as to why I cannot access the menus but for now, I'm
almost finished configuring my VPC. The only pressing task remaining is to
get it to print.

I read somewhere that I need to set up the USB printer as a shared printer
and print over the network. I think I need to overcome some permissions
issue and hopefully I will be at end of job soon.

I will try to get that done and if I need help I will post a new item with
an appropriate subject line, as I do not believe that the printer setup has
anything to do with the VM Machine Additions.

AHA! Look in your Display Settings for the VM and see if "Hide VM menu
bar" is checked! You will have to shut down the VM in order to change this
setting.

Yeah, I think sharing a USB printer works.
